Sources in Helmand say the Taliban have removed all their nighttime checkpoints in Lashkar Gah, the provincial capital, over the past week.
Sources told the Hasht-e Subh Daily on Sunday, October 18, that Taliban checkpoints remain active in various parts of the city during the day. However, the group’s fighters are now confined to their respective posts at night and are no longer seen on the streets as frequently as before.
According to the sources, at the beginning of last week, unidentified motorcyclists threw several hand grenades at the Helmand provincial governor’s office.
The incident occurred on the eastern side of the governor’s office building, just a few meters from the Taliban’s General Directorate of Courts and its military court administration.
The sources added that four days ago, motorcyclists also threw hand grenades at the Taliban’s Second Security District office.
However, they did not provide precise information about possible casualties in either incident.
The incidents come just days after several Taliban fighters were killed and wounded in clashes between members of the group over opium smuggling in an area of Helmand.
