The TikTok creator filmed herself inside a car on 23 October, reacting with visible amusement before turning the camera towards a container of steak and rice. The on-screen caption read "iPlate I ase America😭," pointing to the lighthearted frustration behind the post.
The South African @samukelisiwem92 explained she ordered a plate because she misses hot meals typically sold at taxi ranks in South Africa. The food is usually pap or rice with beef, pork or chicken and salads to achieve a seven-colour type of meal. Watch her reaction to the $12 (R200) American plate:
SA divided over American meal
The video quickly drew over 1,300 comments, with South Africans split right down the middle on whether the meal represented value for money.
Tshamano Mukhethwa said:
"The plate is reasonable for the price. $12 makes sense; stop converting currency. To me $12 is like R12; I ignore the conversion."
KG🇿🇦 added a sticker to drive the point home, commenting:
"Ayikho yin i Rank Laphooi."
Others, however, were not convinced.
Fluff said:
"Expensive. More than R200, and no salads."
sunshine noted:
"No coleslaw, beetroot, potato salad nyana."
