Mt. Gox’s rehabilitation trustee has extended the deadline for creditor repayments to Oct. 31, 2027, from Oct. 31, 2026, after obtaining court permission, according to a notice dated Oct. 16.
The one-year extension is intended to give creditors who have not received their funds additional time to complete outstanding procedures or address problems encountered during repayment processing.
Trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi said base repayments, early lump-sum repayments and intermediate repayments have largely been completed for rehabilitation creditors who finished the required procedures and experienced no issues. However, a significant number of creditors remain unpaid because they have not completed the necessary steps, while others have been unable to receive repayments for various reasons related to the process. The trustee said extending the deadline would help facilitate repayments to these creditors where reasonably practicable.
The numbers behind the estate
The estate’s planned distributions include about 142,000 BTC, about 143,000 BCH and ¥69 billion in cash.
Repayments started in July 2024, flowing to creditors through intermediaries including Kraken, Bitstamp and BitGo.
As of mid-2026, around 34,000 to 34,500 BTC remained under the trustee’s control, waiting to reach creditors who have not yet been paid. That remaining pile is roughly a quarter of the Bitcoin earmarked for distribution.
How we got here
Mt. Gox collapsed in 2014 after a hack that cost the exchange approximately 850,000 BTC. The planned payout covers about 142,000 BTC, meaning creditors were never going to be made whole in Bitcoin terms.
What this means for creditors and the market
For those still waiting, creditors who have not completed their procedures get more time to do so, rather than facing a hard cutoff.
The remaining 34,000 or so BTC is the number traders care about. When the estate eventually releases those coins to creditors, some recipients may choose to sell, which is why Mt. Gox wallet activity tends to draw attention.
An extended deadline does not necessarily mean the remaining coins will sit untouched until late 2027. It sets the outer limit for completing repayments, not a schedule for when individual distributions happen. Distributions could still occur in batches before then, depending on how quickly creditors clear their remaining steps.
With about 143,000 BCH in planned distributions, holders of that asset have their own reason to keep an eye on the trustee’s announcements.
What to watch from here: further updates from Kobayashi on how many creditors complete their procedures, any new distribution rounds through Kraken, Bitstamp, BitGo or other intermediaries, and whether the October 31, 2027 target holds or becomes the fifth date on an already long list.
