A philanthropist and businessman, Eze Chukwudi, has donated 30 adjustable hospital beds to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) to improve patient comfort and support healthcare delivery.
Chukwudi, who made the donation on Tuesday, said the gesture was inspired by his personal ties to Benin City and his recent experience bringing an aunt to the hospital for medical care.
He stated that the donation was his way of giving back to society and supporting patients who require medical attention but may be unable to help themselves.
“I am a businessman. I schooled at the University of Benin and also resides partially in Benin. When I brought an aunt to the hospital, I felt I could give back to society from what society has given me.
“It is about trying to contribute something beneficial to Nigerians and the country,” he said.
Describing UBTH as a critical referral centre for patients from across the South-South region, Chukwudi said the hospital plays a vital role in treating cases that other healthcare facilities may be unable to handle.
“UBTH is a hospital to which other hospitals refer patients. It is like the last hope for a dying man. I believe this little contribution will support the good work the hospital is already doing,” he said.
He called on Nigerians to support one another, particularly at a time when many citizens are facing economic difficulties.
On her part, the Chief Medical Director of UBTH, Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, expressed gratitude to Chukwudi for the gesture, describing it as a contribution to the hospital’s efforts to provide care for patients.
Describing the contribution as a pleasant surprise, Prof. Ize-Iyamu noted that the gesture significantly addresses critical infrastructure needs and complements government efforts in delivering quality healthcare to Nigerians.
