Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka appeared before the Special Executive Magistrate at the Mandir Marg police station on Friday, police sources said.
The sources further said that they were questioned in connection with two separate cases registered against them.
Das and Ranka, along with CJP activist Ajinkya Shinde, had been summoned for questioning at the Crime Branch’s Rajouri Garden office on Thursday, October 22. However, none of the three appeared at the scheduled time and sought additional time to join the investigation, following which police said fresh notices would be issued.
On October 21, SEM Ritu Raj ordered the release of Das and Ranka after accepting their personal and surety bonds of Rs 50,000 each. The bonds will remain valid until the conclusion of the inquiry.
Their release was conditional on written undertakings not to breach peace or protest at Jantar Mantar while it remains denotified.
The magistrate held that continued detention was not required at that stage in view of the written undertakings submitted by the activists.
“Further judicial custody does not appear to be necessary at this stage, particularly after written undertakings before this Court,” the magistrate observed.
The release came after Delhi Police requested an additional three days of judicial custody, citing concerns about a possible breach of peace and law-and-order issues. Police also referred to alleged discrepancies between the activists’ statements before the court, their subsequent remarks to the media and their written responses.
Das and Ranka were initially remanded to five days of judicial custody on October 14. Their custody was extended by another two days on October 19, with the court expressing concerns over compliance with the law and the possibility of further disturbances.
On October 21, the Delhi High Court declined to intervene in their custody, observing that the SEM court was already examining the matter. The activists later withdrew their writ petition after the High Court indicated that a revision petition could be an appropriate remedy if the magistrate denied relief. The withdrawal was permitted without any opinion on the merits of the case.
After their release on October 21, Das and Ranka were seen holding the national flag and raising slogans in a video shared on X by CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke. The slogans included “Inquilab Zindabad”, “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Gyanu must go”, reiterating the party’s demand for the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Dipke captioned the post “Boys have a message” and “Gyanu must go!”
