Sri Lanka etched their names in the history books with a remarkable batting display in Rawalpindi on Thursday, chasing down a mammoth target of 430 to beat England by two wickets.
Earlier, England had posted a colossal 429 for four, powered by a record-breaking double century from Harry Brook, who smashed an unbeaten 202 off just 116 balls, including 21 fours and 10 sixes.
Here are the key records and highlights from the match:
430 – Sri Lanka's successful chase of 430 is the second-highest in men's ODI history, behind South Africa's 435-run chase against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006.
859 – The aggregate of 859 runs is the second-highest in an ODI match. The record remains 872 runs, scored by South Africa and Australia in Johannesburg in 2006.
1 – Brook became the first batter to score an ODI double century in a losing cause. The previous highest individual score in a losing effort was Charles Coventry's unbeaten 194 against Bangladesh in 2009.
8 – England have now posted totals of 400 or more eight times in men's ODIs, level with South Africa for the second-most such totals. India lead the list with nine, while Sri Lanka have done so three times.
114 – Brook took just 114 balls to complete his double century, making it the fastest in men's ODI cricket. Shubman Gill previously held the record after reaching the milestone off 117 balls against West Indies in Guwahati last month.
1 – Brook became the first England batter to score a double century in men's ODIs. Ben Stokes previously held England's highest individual ODI score with 182 against New Zealand at The Oval in 2023.
Brook also became the first batter to score an ODI double century in Pakistan. The previous highest individual score in the country was Gary Kirsten's unbeaten 188 against the United Arab Emirates during the 1996 World Cup. Kirsten, now Sri Lanka's coach, was in Rawalpindi to witness the record being broken 30 years later.
2 – Brook became the second non-opener to score an ODI double century, after Glenn Maxwell. Brook's 202 is the highest individual score by a non-opener in men's ODIs, surpassing Maxwell's unbeaten 201 at No. 6 against Afghanistan in the 2023 World Cup. The previous highest score by a No. 4 batter was Viv Richards' unbeaten 189 against England in Manchester in 1984.
4 – Brook became the fourth captain to score an ODI double century in men's cricket. The others are Virender Sehwag, against West Indies in 2011; Rohit Sharma, against Sri Lanka in 2017; and Gill, against West Indies last month.
1 – Brook's 202 is the highest individual ODI score by an England captain. The previous record was Andrew Strauss's 158 against India during the 2011 World Cup.
8 – Eight batters scored fifty or more in the match, equalling the record for the most individual fifty-plus scores in an ODI.
1 – England's 429 for four surpassed Pakistan's 375 for three against Zimbabwe in Lahore in 2015, previously the highest ODI total in Pakistan. England's total was 54 runs higher, but Sri Lanka went on to complete the record chase.
8,000 – Joe Root became the first England batter to reach 8,000 runs in men's ODIs. Eoin Morgan is second on England's list with 6,957 runs. Overall, Root became the 34th batter to reach the milestone.
