Ask any woman over 40, and she’ll tell you that life becomes notably better with age.
You know more, which leads to more confidence. You have a lot more money … hopefully, and all the people you used to care about impressing now take up zero real estate in your mind.
The one thing that may not be so great is what your body does. The estrogen that was plentiful and consistent in your 20s has started to dip and spike, creating a storm of unpleasant physical symptoms.
The simplest term for this is perimenopause — the period when the hormones that give you a period in the first place begin to cop an attitude. Along with irregular periods (often the first telltale sign something is up), symptoms can include hot flashes and night sweats, mood swings and a host of other things that if I listed them all, would likely depress you.
With more Gen X women taking to social platforms to openly discuss their perimenopause journeys, there’s less stigma and fear around getting hormone replacement therapy (HRT), one of the most popular treatment options. But, as you may have already heard, there’s currently a shortage of estrogen patches, and not everyone wants or is a good candidate for HRT.
This may be one of the reasons more than 50% of women, according to a 2023 cross-sectional study, are seeking natural alternatives to combat peri-symptoms, but unfortunately, dietary supplements aren’t approved for safety and effectiveness by the FDA. Rather than sweat it out (and according to reports, perimenopause can start in your 30s and last for up to 10 years or more), the better option is to seek out supplements from brands with a track record of using traceable, clinically studied ingredients and third-party testing. For many women, that brand is Ritual and its Perimenopause Health.
Ritual Perimenopause Health

Founded in 2016, Ritual remains one of the top supplements on the market and for good reason. One of the few brands to earn a certified B Corporation, women (and men) love it for its transparency and commitment to creating science-backed formulas. Its new Perimenopause Health dietary supplement was developed in partnership with OB/GYNs on Ritual’s scientific advisory board to support hormone balance, one daily pill at a time.
The supplement has diindolylmethane (DIM), a naturally occurring compound that helps break down estrogen to a smaller metabolite. If you’re unfamiliar with how estrogen works, this may seem counterintuitive, but many things, such as higher body fat and stress, can cause estrogen to rise, even during perimenopause. Too much can trigger fatigue, tank libido, cause weight gain and more.
Perimenopause Health also features SheVari4, a derivative of shatavari extract, which has been clinically shown to improve mood, sleep and ease hot flashes and night sweats. Evening primrose supports the absorption of DIM and has been studied for easing night sweats, while vitamin B supports hormonal activity.
Like all Ritual supplements, Perimenopause Health is made traceable, vegan, sugar-free, gluten-free and non-GMO. It doesn’t contain any hormones and is third-party tested.
Even if you’re not exhibiting signs of perimenopause, the supplement may still be worth adding to your routine, especially if you’re in the age range (remember, mid-30s and up) and want something to support hormones and healthy cortisol levels. Editor’s Note: It’s always important to consult with a physician before trying a new supplement.
Similar to puberty (or aging), perimenopause is a natural part of life. The trick is finding the things that support you along the way. Don’t be surprised if this new supplement ends up being one of them.
*Editor’s Note: It’s important to always consult with your physician before adding a new supplement to your routine.
