The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State has been plunged into fresh turmoil following the immediate resignation of its State Chairman, Barrister Venatius Ikem, citing a “crisis of direction and leadership coherence” within the party.
In an official resignation letter addressed to the PDP National Secretary at the Wadata House National Secretariat in Abuja, and copied to the State Secretary in Calabar, Ikem declared that his decision was effective immediately.
Outlining his reasons for stepping down after five years at the helm, Ikem described the move as an “exceptionally difficult decision” reached after deep introspection regarding prevailing internal party dynamics.
“It follows a careful reflection on the current realities of our party and my conviction that I can no longer effectively serve in this position under circumstances that increasingly challenge the principles, cohesion, and sense of purpose that should define our collective efforts,” he stated.
He added that as the country enters a critical political cycle, reconciling his executive responsibilities with divergent factions within the state chapter had become increasingly unfeasible.
“In my considered view, the party is presently grappling with a crisis of direction and leadership coherence. These challenges have significantly diminished our effectiveness and, if left unaddressed, risk undermining the sacrifices, investments, and aspirations of many loyal members,” the letter read.
Despite his critical assessment of the party’s trajectory, the outgoing State Chairman expressed deep gratitude to the party’s leadership and supporters across Cross River State, particularly in his home constituency of Obudu.

Ikem singled out prominent party stakeholders for special appreciation, including Senator (Prof) Sandy Onor, Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe, and Chief Nyesom Wike, CON, (PDP National Leader and FCT Minister), whose contribution to collective party efforts he described as “indelible and worthy of recognition.”
Addressing his political supporters, Ikem hinted at future political moves, noting that leadership often requires periods of “reassessment and renewal.”
“I believe I have reached a moment where a clearer vision and a new pathway are necessary, both for myself and for those who have entrusted me with their confidence and support,” he said, reiterating his commitment to the development of Cross River State.
As of press time, the national and state secretariats of the PDP are yet to issue an official statement regarding a replacement or caretaker arrangement for the Cross River State leadership.
