Timberwolves overreactions: Anthony Edwards-LaMelo Ball duo makes Minnesota a legitimate threat to Thunder, Spurs appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Minnesota Timberwolves’ Anthony Edwards-LaMelo Ball duo changes the complexion of the Western Conference as a legitimate threat to the Oklahoma City Thunder and the defending conference champion San Antonio Spurs. After failing to reach the Western Conference Finals for a third consecutive appearance, the Timberwolves traded for Ball to pair with Edwards over the summer.
For the first time in his career, Edwards has another 20+ point scorer to share the ball with. And it’s off to an ideal start for the Timberwolves, who defeated the Miami Heat by 25 points in a 131-106 rout in their regular-season opener. Edwards’ whopping 45 points on 16-for-29 attempts, including nine threes, 10 rebounds, and two steals led Minnesota.
LaMelo Ball finished with 21 points, including five threes, six assists, and two steals in his Timberwolves debut. Jaden McDaniels added 17 points on 8-for-11 attempts, eight rebounds, and three steals, and Jonathan Kuminga tallied a dozen points, four steals, and one block in his first game with Minnesota.

In an attempt to keep up with the Spurs and the Thunder, adding Ball’s offensive firepower coupled with his improved defensive approach, addressed both ends of the floor for the Timberwolves. And he’s only 25. Ball’s still projected to take another stride in his development, and playing in Minnesota is the perfect environment for him to do so.
For the first time in his career, Ball’s playing for a team projected to not only reach the playoffs, but potentially make another deep run. The Timberwolves reached the Western Conference Finals in back-to-back seasons in 2025, where they were eliminated by the Thunder in five games (4-1). Then, the young Spurs, led by Defensive Player of the Year Victor Wembanyama, arrived in 2026, beating the Timberwolves 4-2 in the Western Conference semifinals.
Keeping their defensive anchors, Rudy Gobert and McDainels, intact for the upcoming season, the Timberwolves gave Anthony Edwards a high-powered scorer to keep up with a three-guard attack in the Spurs’ De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper. And with an elite wing defender in McDaniels and a rim protector in Gobert, the Timberwolves can rise to the occasion against the likes of the Thunder’s star trio, led by two-time MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, All-Star Chet Holmgren, and Jalen Williams.
With two Western Conference Finals apperances under his belt, Edwards is motivated to get over the hump. His two-way game is ideal as the leading scorer for a Timberwolves team trying to prevent another Thunder-Spurs Western Conference Finals rematch in 2027.
Plus, Ayo Dosunmu is entering his prime. He’s cemented a sixth man role after averaging 14.4 points on 52.1/41.4/92.5 shooting splits, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.5 assists last season. The 2026-27 Timberwolves have the best chances of reaching the Finals since the Hall of Fame forward Kevin Garnett-led team that came up two-wins short against the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference Finals in 2004.
