A U.S.-based philanthropist, Acho Orabuchi, on Thursday donated gift items and money to a charity organisation, Save the Motherless and Abandoned Children Orphanage Home, Owerri, Imo State.
Mr Orabuchi said the gesture was in keeping with his annual ritual of reaching out to the vulnerable children with essential items and financial support aimed at giving them a sense of belonging and hope.
The items, including rice, beverage detergent, noodles among others, as well as money, were delivered at the home on his behalf by Shirley Munonye.
Mr Orabuchi, who joined the ceremony virtually, explained that the gesture was a demonstration of his humanitarian disposition and community development efforts.
He said the donation was borne out of his deep passion for humanity and commitment to upholding the core values of the People’s Club of Nigeria International.
The values of the club are anchored on love, unity and service to humanity.
Mr Orabuchi, a member of the Waco, Texas, Branch of the People’s Club of Nigeria International (PCNI), added that remembering the needy was a divine obligation that every privileged person owed God and humanity.
According to him, giving back to society, especially to the less-privileged, remains a moral obligation that every well-meaning individual must embrace.
“These children are our future and our responsibilities. It gives me great joy to put a smile on their faces. This is not just a donation; it is an investment in humanity and an expression of God’s love,” he said.
He added that the donation marked the beginning of a broader philanthropic drive, promising to extend similar support to other organisations and foundations that cater for less-privileged people across Imo State.
He noted, “In the past years, I have been visiting charity homes in Imo, Kano and Abuja. This time I felt that getting the media involved is to appeal to the conscience of more privileged persons to look to the way of the needy in our society.
“I do extend medical assistance and scholarships to people in Ogbaeruru-Orlu, my country home, but as the population continues to grow, the task of helping the needy keeps expanding.”
Mr Orabuchi, who used the medium to call on the government to do more in alleviating the plights of the less- privileged and vulnerable in society, said Nigeria had was required to make its citizens comfortable.
“Nigeria as a country is richly blessed and can afford the best world-class medical facilities as well as social security to make its citizens okay.
“What I think is lacking and which we should look into is getting the right people into positions of trust to fix different sectors,” he said.
Mr Orabuchi used the medium to appreciate the National and International President of PCNI, Fidelis Onyebueke, Chairman Governing Council and Patron Trustee, Arinze and Chairman People’s Club of Nigeria International, Waco, Texas Branch, Iyke Ginigeme.
He said they encourage the Diaspora community to always remember where they were coming from.
He said such a principle had guided many Nigerians abroad to assist the downtrodden and take up developmental projects in their communities.
Responding on behalf of the management of the orphanage home, the Matron, Kelechi Onu, thanked Mr Orabuchi for the gesture.
She said both staff members and children of the orphanage home were excited over Mr Orabuchi’s benevolence.
The management of the home also commended the Waco, Texas Branch of PCNI for raising men of honour and integrity such as Mr Orabuchi.
She said they had continued to make the Igbo nation proud in the diaspora through impactful community service.
The children used the event to thank and pray for Mr Orabuchi for his kindness.
