Enugu state governor, Peter Mbah, has restated the commitment of his administration to ensuring that lives and property of the people are protected.
Mbah made the assertion in an address to the people of the state on Monday on the reported cases of violence at political gatherings in different parts of the state in recent time.
With particular reference to the shooting that took place last Saturday, Mbah said that the perpetrators of such acts, including the earlier attack at the meeting of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) at Obuoffia, would be dealt with according to the dictates of the law.
NDC supporters were shot during a official flag-off campaign for the governorship candidate, Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa.
Also, the party members were molestated at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport where Ohaa was received for the official flag off of campaigns.
The governor stated that those responsible for the heinous acts would be accountable for their inglorious actions.
His words, “My dear Ndi Enugu, I am deeply concerned by the reports of violence surrounding the recent political gathering in Enugu, particularly the shooting that left a citizen injured. My immediate concern is for those who have been hurt, those who experienced fear, and the families affected. I want to assure them that their safety and well-being matter to me personally.
“I know how much our people value the peace and security we have worked so hard to establish in Enugu. Incidents such as these cause anxiety and deserve our full attention,” he said, threatening to dealt with anyone, however placed that has a hand in the disturbances.
“Every citizen, whatever their political affiliation, must be able to exercise their political rights without fear or violence.
“The Enugu state government has made its position clear regarding allegations of involvement in this violence. Our fundamental responsibility as a government is to protect lives, uphold the law, and ensure that justice is pursued without favour.In furtherance of our preliminary findings regarding the incident, I expect the police to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation.
“Anyone found responsible for these acts will be held accountable through the proper legal process, regardless of their political connections,” he declared.
