A former Berkeley swimmer and US national team member, Breed embraced open-water swimming after joining San Francisco’s Dolphin Club.
For 111 days, Catherine Breed's world was measured in stretches of open water. One day brought towering waves, another brought punishing currents, and sometimes the ocean offered little more than exhaustion and uncertainty.
Swimming roughly 10 miles a day, the 33-year-old ultra-endurance athlete has now completed a 900-mile journey along California's coastline, turning an extraordinary personal challenge into a broader statement about endurance and ocean conservation.
900 miles, one stroke at a time
According to The Guardian, Breed began her swim on July 1 at the northern edge of California, close to the Oregon border, with the goal of reaching San Diego in less than four months.
Rather than attempting the coastline in one continuous swim, she tackled it in stages, covering about 10 miles on swimming days while a support vessel accompanied her throughout the expedition. As per the report, her team also documented the journey for the World Open Water Swimming Association. Breed slept aboard the support ship between stages and stopped at various points along the coast to participate in events with ocean conservation organisations, adds The Guardian report.
Much of the expedition was also shared online, giving viewers a glimpse into the physical demands of an undertaking that stretched across more than 900 miles of Pacific coastline.According to Swimming World report, the scale was dramatically different from Breed's previous endurance swims. She had already crossed the English Channel in 2018 and the North Channel between Northern Ireland and Scotland in 2019, but those iconic open-water crossings were relatively short compared with the sustained demands of swimming down an entire coastline.
Seven-foot waves and relentless conditions
The Guardian report states that Breed encountered waves reaching around seven feet, with rough conditions making sections of the journey feel more like being trapped in a washing machine than moving steadily through the water.Weather added another layer of difficulty. The swim coincided with an unusually intense El Niño season, bringing tropical storms, powerful surf and shifting ocean conditions. A large pulse of warm water, known as a Kelvin wave, also moved northward through the Pacific during the expedition, the report explains. For Breed, the conditions meant fighting currents for much of the journey rather than benefiting from them. The final stretch presented another challenge as she approached Imperial Beach near the US-Mexico border, an area known for severely polluted coastal waters.
An environmental message beneath the challenge
The Swimming World states that the difficult final miles underscored one of the central reasons Breed undertook the expedition. "I wanted to prove to myself that I could endure, highlight California's coastline, and inspire more people to conserve the ocean," she said. The swimmer saw the Pacific's sea life and dramatic coastlines, but also plastic waste and polluted water for months. Her journey became a moving portrait of an ecosystem that can be both breathtaking and deeply vulnerable.Breed has also used the swim to encourage more women and girls to spend time in and around the ocean, hoping the expedition will inspire a stronger connection with the water, the report explains.
A lifetime in open water
For the uninitiated, for Breed, the coastline is familiar territory. A former University of California, Berkeley long-distance swimmer and US national team member, she moved into open-water swimming after college through San Francisco's Dolphin Club. Her record already includes a fast swim across Lake Tahoe in 2017, a 25-mile journey from the Golden Gate Bridge to Half Moon Bay in 2022 and a demanding 30-mile crossing from the Farallon Islands to the Golden Gate Bridge last year.Images Courtesy: Instagram/catherinebreed
