Guwahati, Oct 24: Nearly two centuries after it emerged as a centre of trade in Guwahati, Bargola, the historic commercial building in Fancy Bazar, has been listed as a heritage property by the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH).
Located on Mahasingh Meghraj Road, the building has been accorded Grade IIA heritage status for its historical, architectural and associative value, according to a certificate issued by INTACH’s Kamrup chapters on September 21, 2026.
The certificate states that Bargola was established in 1828 by Mahasingh Rai Kuthari and is among the oldest surviving buildings in historic Fancy Bazar.
It also recognises the building’s role in the area’s emergence as a major wholesale trading centre and its association with early municipal and colonial administrative functions.
