It became a generation-defining television show that captured the messy, uncomfortable and self-absorbed realities of millennial womanhood in New York City.
Girls originally premiered on HBO in 2012 and became an instant phenomenon, with fans calling it the perfect antidote to the polished designer-clad depiction of Manhattan in Sex and the City.
The series, which documented the trials and tribulations of 20-something New Yorkers Hannah, Marnie, Jessa and Shoshanna, ended in 2017 and was later ranked as one of the greatest television shows of all time.
Created by Lena Dunham, who wrote the pilot in her early twenties, the series helped establish her as a prominent cultural figure, while the series helped establish Adam Driver as a rising screen actor.
It also earned 19 Emmy nominations and two wins, including one for outstanding casting for a comedy series for its stars Lena, Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke and Zosia Mamet.
This week, Lena announced that Girls is officially returning to the small screen, exactly one decade after its heart-wrenching final season aired.

In addition to the actress, original cast members Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet and Andrew Rannells are all returning for the new season.
Judd Apatow, who helped get the show greenlit with HBO, will also return as executive producer.
'We always said we would only return to 'Girls' if there was a specific story we were burning to tell,' Lena said in a statement.
'I've missed these characters, but for a long time I couldn't quite picture them in the present day.
'Then, right around my 40th birthday, they started talking to me in the shower. And, as you may remember, once this fivesome starts talking it's pretty hard to get them to stop,' she said.
With that in mind, the Daily Mail takes a look at what the cast of Girls are up to now.
