That Ferrari's strategies are often flawed and highly questionable is something that usually falls within the dynamic of the F1 World Championship. However, the Singapore Grand Prix was different, as the Italian team drew up a good plan so that its two drivers could achieve a favorable result, especially for the Briton, who, although far behind, is still alive in the fight for the World Championship.
Hamilton isn't suited to the role of strategist
A second and third place were what Leclerc and Hamilton had secured, respectively, had they followed the instructions to the letter. However, one of them decided to play strategist and it did not work out well.
The Briton was called to Box along with his teammate, Charles Leclerc, during the Virtual Safety Car, however, he decided not to come in and stay out on track with very worn soft tires, costing him the podium, in a World Championship where every single point counts, especially for him, who still has some chance.
'"We called both cars: "Guys, come back to the pits under the VSC regime," and one of my drivers said: "No, I’d rather stay out on track," and he skipped the pit entry. Don’t blame the team.", Fred Vasseur declared forcefully.'
The war with the press continues
'Faced with such a failed strategy, and its consequent disastrous results for Lewis Hamilton, the press began asking questions that ended up irritating the team principal of the Italian outfit: "Did you ask McLaren so many questions like that yesterday?", Vasseur replied ironically, referring to the clash between Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris during Saturday's Sprint . '
'However, and despite the poor result that was ultimately obtained, Vasseur tried to look on the bright side of the weekend overall: "I'm not angry. Overall, it has been a good weekend. Both drivers did an excellent job. When we asked them to swap positions on track, they did it, they had a clear attitude and were also fair with each other".'
Even so, there are nuances that still need to be improved, to avoid certain situations like the one experienced in the race, where 10 overly valuable points were lost, as Vasseur explained: "But today there was the opportunity to finish second and third, and it's a shame to lose world championship points this way. We have to talk with Hamilton to try to avoid situations like this in the future".
