The first AP Top 25 Poll came out on Monday, and Duke was ranked #2, behind only Florida. The only three teams to get #1 votes were the Gators (47), Duke (10), and Illinois (2), presumably from some homer reporters. UConn and Arizona round out the Top 5.
Also ranked from the ACC: Virginia (#9), Louisville (#11), and Miami (#14). UNC got 20 votes, and Virginia Tech, somewhat surprisingly, at least to us, got 10.
Other interesting rankings: Tennessee, in Cameron Tuesday night, is #8, Houston checks in at #10, John Calipari’s Arkansas is #12, defending champ Michigan is #16, Kansas is #17, but that was before the extraordinarily late addition of Trey Kaufman-Renn, and Kentucky is #23.
This is also interesting: we think the last preseason #1 team to win the title was UNC in 2008-09. Florida is in a good situation, but Rueben Chiyenlu essentially guaranteed a championship. It’s certainly possible, but it seems a bit premature, if not foolish, to be saying stuff like that. But he could be right. Florida should be really good.
