Who needs horror movies? The modern world is scary enough with the continued crisis of climate change, the existential threat of AI and the increasingly bizarre caricatures in leading positions of political power. Yet, the genre is more booming than ever, with 2025 high-achievers Sinners and Weapons joining this year’s impressive horror offerings Obsession and Backrooms in the contemporary revival.
Just why young cinemagoers in particular are opting to gorge on this horror smorgasbord is something film studios across the globe are scrambling to understand, but one reason being offered is that cinema provides an outlet to process real-world anxieties.
Indeed, with the arrival of 'elevated horror' that melds cinematic terror with grounded drama, often rooted in a buzzy social issue, the genre has become an answer to life’s trickiest modern dilemmas.
Horror lovers will be quick to correct you though – the genre has been 'elevated' for years, with guts, gore and gruesomeness having long been a way to excavate social fears and hold a mirror to contemporary anxieties.
In fact, the following 10 classic horror movies have become even more horrifying with time, with their political, social or existential themes continuing to bubble since their release — subsequently mutating into something even more monstrous.

28 Days Later (2002)
The Covid-19 pandemic of 2020 onwards put a whole host of things into perspective – no less humanity’s vulnerability to new infections and viruses. Unsurprisingly, after lockdown commenced and people got bored of flitting between desperately baking sourdough and doing Zoom quizzes, pandemic-related media saw an upsurge in interest and popularity.
Steven Soderbergh’s disturbingly prescient 2011 film Contagion, which used the phrase ‘social distancing’ long before Boris Johnson did, was one such film, yet few could ignore the eerie parallels between the barren streets of London depicted in 28 Days Later and the self-same images that cropped up on the news every night.
Worlds away from George Romero’s shuffling zombies from 1968’s genre pioneer Night of the Living Dead, the infected of Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later were rabid, bloodthirsty animals incensed with rage. Thankfully, while such creatures remain a thing of fiction, after the devastation of Covid-19, the desolate images of London and rural England, as well as the post-pandemic paranoia that pervades the film, tugs the events of Boyle’s classic a little closer to reality.
Penned by Alex Garland, the revelatory 2002 horror thriller opens with Cillian Murphy’s Jim desperately seeking answers as he stumbles through the godforsaken capital. It was a moment that proved so iconic that it’s been imitated time and time again, from the opening of The Walking Dead to the videos of Covid-era YouTubers taking to the streets to recreate the moment to a frightening degree of accuracy.
28 Days Later is available to rent on Prime Video in the UK and US.
The Birds (1963)
View oEmbed on the source websiteDubbed the 'Master of Suspense', Alfred Hitchcock is remembered for his tantalising thriller Vertigo, gothic romance Rebecca and shockingly influential proto-slasher Psycho. Yet, as the years pass by and climate change becomes an increasing emergency with every warming summer, his 1963 film The Birds, based on the novel of the same name by Daphne du Maurier, becomes ever more haunting.
Feeling like a gentle romcom that becomes steadily infiltrated by a horror entity, The Birds begins with Tippi Hedren's Melanie travelling to a coastal Northern California town in pursuit of handsome lawyer Mitch (Rod Taylor). Awkwardly located, she must traverse a bay on a small rowing boat to get to him, but shortly before she disembarks, a seagull swoops down and pecks her on the head – the murderous murmuration begins.
Cue running, hiding and desperately flapping at the swooping figures – but after all is said and done, a reason as to the birds' violent turn is never offered. This frames the film with an ominous eco-apocalyptic message, with nature violently revolting against the destructive nature of humanity, reminding us of our own vulnerability in the natural order.
The climate catastrophe has severely worsened since the '60s, with extreme weather patterns becoming significantly more volatile, prompting an increase in wildfires, landslides and floods. Such makes The Birds a haunting harbinger of ecological collapse, and with wild bird populations in the UK having fallen to their lowest levels since records began, Hitchcock’s horror has become more urgent than ever.
The Birds is available to rent on Prime Video and to stream on Peacock in the US.
Demon Seed (1977)
View oEmbed on the source websiteAI was but a flicker in the eyes of mad scientists across the world back in the 1970s, a far cry from the likes of Claude and Gemini who are patiently waiting at our disposal in the 2020s. But, a mixture of rapid technological change and a national disillusionment that gave birth to the paranoid thriller, created a unique kind of horror that toyed with human biology and its relationship with our robo-companions.
Helmed by British director Donald Cammell, Demon Seed was certainly one of the stranger films to take on this topic, with the body horror oddity being adapted from a novel of the same name by Dean R Koontz. Set in a futuristic automated home, the film sees Julie Christie’s Susan attempt to evade a rogue AI that her husband Alex (Fritz Weaver) has carelessly allowed to run amok in their home.
Alex has installed the AI with the entirety of human knowledge, but soon it has advanced beyond developing a novel treatment for leukaemia and, with its murderous intelligence, demands a life outside its digital cage. Such isn’t entirely unlike the AI of today which, with rapid frequency, is escaping the control of its users, with new research suggesting that the deception of AI models is worsening.
The rapid rise of AI and interconnected smart home devices that wirelessly communicate bring the fantasies of Demon Seed into reality. Intelligent doorbells, fridges, picture frames, thermostats, lights, locks and cameras make the idea of being held captive by malevolent AI somewhat plausible. As for Demon Seed’s other, more disturbing take on AI impregnating a woman and creating a golden robot baby – we’ll take a miss.
Demon Seed is available to stream for free on Plex or Pluto TV in the UK and Chilling in the US.
Existenz (1999)
View oEmbed on the source websiteSpeaking of body horror and the existential intersection between human flesh and technology — enter David Cronenberg. Long transfixed by tales of goopy orifices, psychological terror and horrifying bodily transformations, Cronenberg is a cinematic pioneer, known for such provocative creations as The Fly (1986), Crash (1996) and 1983’s Videodrome (more on that later).
Yet, one of his most unsung achievements is 1999’s Existenz, a prescient sci-fi horror that tells the story of a game designer, Allegra (Jennifer Jason Leigh), who evades assassins with marketer Ted (Jude Law) while inside a virtual reality video game of her own creation. Matrix-like in the way it toys with synthetic realities, Existenz is equally as playful, becoming a biopunk wonderland the closer you’re pulled into its magnetic orbit, coloured by pulsating fleshy ‘MetaFlesh Game-Pod’ consoles and spinal ports that plug players into the game.
Thankfully, we haven’t yet got to the icky point where our PlayStations are hyperventilating, but there are truths in the DNA of Cronenberg’s pre-millennium horror that would later pervade the new century, in particular the idea that a game could present an existential threat to reality. Existenz could indeed be read as a prophetic allegory for the coming threat of social media, an ever-more complex ‘game’ where algorithms feed on attention, violence and deceit, increasingly threatening to deconstruct reality itself.
Tech companies like Apple and Meta have both dipped their bulbous toes in the water with their own VR creations, the Vision Pro and the Meta Quest respectively, and while neither has truly taken the world by storm, their presence suggests new boundaries for the future of business, entertainment and surveillance. As Cronenberg suggested back in 1999, our concept of reality is starting to splinter across several immersive layers.
Existenz is available to stream for free on Pluto TV in the UK and Plex in the US
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
As we already dissected with 1977’s Demon Seed, paranoid thrillers were rife in the ‘70s, particularly in the wake of the Watergate scandal and a largely unpopular Vietnam war campaign that saw mass public disillusionment. Alan J Pakula’s Parallax View and Francis Ford Coppola’s The Conversation rightfully emerged as iconic films of the movement, but arguably it’s Philip Kaufman’s timely remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers that remains the most enduring.
Melding the social anxiety of the time with the body horror trend that was permeating through the genre, Invasion of the Body Snatchers is a surprisingly nasty sci-fi that sees a cosmic seed land on Earth and release an organism that infiltrates and replicates the residents of San Francisco. Replicating the humans’ memories and physical likeness while discarding their soul and spirit, alien pods birth new all-conforming versions and leave corpse husks in their wake.
Such creates a homogenous hivemind of individuals who conform without protest or complaint — an interesting parallel with the widespread mass consumerism that pervaded ‘70s society. Over half a century later and this prophetic warning of submissive conformity and groupthink can be seen mirrored in social media, politics and beyond.
"It’s as valid now as it was then, maybe more so," Kaufman told The Hollywood Reporter in 2018, before referencing the film’s renowned conclusion in which scientist Matthew (Donald Sutherland) finally succumbs to the cosmic invaders. "[Donald Sutherland’s pod shriek] at the end of the film could be a very Trumpian scream."
The shrill of Sutherland’s iconic scream is like an alarm that sounds once the damage has already been done – a fitting ringing warning to blind contemporary conformity and social apathy.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers is available to stream for free on Tubi in the UK and MGM+ in the US.
Looker (1981)
View oEmbed on the source websiteFrom his jaw-snapping classic Jurassic Park to the AI-gone-rogue thriller Westworld, American author Michael Crichton was one of sci-fi’s greatest minds. But, before Steven Spielberg created the prehistoric blockbuster and HBO got its hands on the robo-western, Crichton wrote and directed 1981’s Looker, an often forgotten project that predicted a remarkable amount when it comes to modern beauty standards’ relationship with AI.
"My nose is 0.2mm too narrow and my cheekbones are 0.4mm too high," Terri Welles’s Lisa complains during the film’s trailer – a line that wouldn’t feel out of place in a contemporary looksmaxxing video – shortly before she goes under the knife. After the surgery, Lisa tragically dies in an apparent suicide, but this is merely the first of many such disastrous occurrences following procedures with the same surgeon, Dr Larry Roberts (Albert Finney), prompting him to investigate.
Turns out something pretty dystopian was going on, a powerful corporation called Digital Matrix was replacing the real-life models with uncanny AI clones, blindly conforming bots who would spout whatever political or consumerist message they were programmed to. Decades before it became a disturbing reality, Looker pretty accurately foresees the arrival of deepfake AI creations that are used to say and do whatever they're prompted to do – all at the will of their creator.
In an age of rife political debate, where actors have often ended up in hot water for being a little too vocal about particularly contentious topics, the promise of an AI model who will toe a very defined corporate line has become too tempting for some to ignore. Along with the much publicised AI ‘actor’ Tilly Norwood, fashion brands like Guess have experimented with AI models in advertising, suggesting a future where corporations no longer have to contend with human whims.
Looker is available to rent on Prime Video in the UK and US.
Pulse (2001)
View oEmbed on the source websiteWhile American horror cinema in the ‘90s was still hungover from the slasher era of the previous decade, across the world in Japan, the genre was thriving. The phenomenon of Hideo Nakata’s eerie techno-horror Ringu permeated through the industry, not unlike the cursed videotape of the film itself, opening the door to the global success of J-horror with Takashi Miike's Audition, Takashi Shimizu’s The Grudge and Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Pulse.
Like Ringu, Pulse also focused on the eerie imperfections of early technology, this time the concept of a cursed internet that allowed spirits to enter the real world through the liminal space between a computer screen and its user. Yet, Pulse was altogether slower in comparison, dwelling on the nightmare of its greyscale environment in which loneliness pervaded like a plague.
Indeed, in this haunting tale, spirits do not perform a terrifying murder on their victims, they instead infect the minds of the living, shrouding the mind with despair until the body fades away, joining the internet’s eternal void. While the internet at the time was a promising tool for social connection, Kurosawa foresaw the contemporary social isolation, alienation and anxiety that it would later spawn.
In 2023 the World Health Organisation “declared loneliness to be a pressing global health threat”, with researchers at Harvard University later finding in a survey that technology was the leading cause for such alienation. As a foreboding meditation on the loneliness epidemic that was merely decades down the line, Pulse is more distressing than ever, with a remake on the way from Never After Dark’s Dave Boyle being evidence of this.
Pulse is available to stream on Shudder or Arrow Video via Prime Video in the UK and AMC+ via Prime Video in the US.
Threads (1984)
Nuclear anxiety was rife throughout the tail-end of the 20th century, with the cataclysmic destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 releasing an existential dread across the planet. Contention between America and Russia didn’t help to quell fears throughout the 1960s, and western media acted appropriately, with terrifying British films like The War Game and The Day After releasing in 1966 and 1983, respectively.
But, neither of those films gained the notoriety of 1984’s Threads, a dystopian sci-fi that sticks so troublingly to the facts that it could only be described as a horror decades later. Bringing the terror of nuclear warfare to viewers’ doorsteps, Threads outlined the reality of what a strike on British soil would actually look like, trading the expected location of London for the rolling hills of Sheffield.
Unfolding with cold accuracy and a documentary-like presentation, Threads presents the very real fallout of a nuclear disaster, replete with graphic imagery of the British public fleeing for help. The resulting film was as unforgettable for the 6.9 million people who watched it being broadcast on BBC Two back in 1984 as it is for those brave few who choose to revisit its terrors in 2026.
Yet, the truth of the matter is that 42 years after its release, Threads is more disturbing than ever, largely thanks to just how much more powerful nuclear weapons have become. As reported in Union of Concerned Scientists: "These modern nuclear warheads are significantly more lethal compared to the atomic bombs used in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The radius of devastation and the resulting blast effects, such as firestorms, radioactive fallout, and thermal radiation, would be significantly larger."
But, fear not, if you’re after a more up-to-date version that could just translate these modern anxieties, Threads is getting a remake from the team behind Netflix’s Adolescence. Yippee.
Threads is available to stream on Shudder in the US.
Videodrome (1983)
"After all, there is nothing real outside our perception of reality, is there?" Jack Creley’s media theorist and technophile Brian O'Blivion spouts in David Cronenberg’s 1983 classic Videodrome. He suggests that “television is reality” and “reality is less than television”, providing a neat parallel to the ways in which modern media attempts to repackage and replace reality, rather than hold a mirror up to it.
Often described as Cronenberg’s very best film, Videodrome follows James Woods’s Max Renn, a morally compromised TV station co-owner searching for the ‘next best thing’ in adult entertainment. That’s when Peter Dvorsky’s Harlan puts Videodrome in front of him, a horrific show supposedly being broadcast out of Malaysia that contains brutal scenes of violence and murder.
Renn becomes obsessed and attempts to track down the origins of the broadcast, which ends up being far closer to home. It’s a visually inventive and deeply unsettling piece of cinema that bathes in its freakishness, with Cronenberg utilising some familiar prosthetic tools for several iconic moments of body horror madness. But, fermenting beneath its surface is a visceral, prophetic understanding of how media can desensitise the viewer, particularly if they’ve binged on its worse offerings.
With a deep interest in the media's relationship with sex and violence, Videodrome is set in a world that isn’t all that different from our own (minus the hallucinatory prosthetics of course). Technology has slipped into every nook and cranny of our modern lives, with every second of our day becoming an attention battleground between devices, with Videodrome predicting how its allure has become an addiction that feeds on our perception of reality.
Videodrome is available to stream on MUBI in the UK and Prime Video in the US.
The Wicker Man (1973)
View oEmbed on the source websiteWhile folk horror is not an explicitly British sub-genre, there is something about its isolationist messaging that makes it particularly terrifying on our little island. Of its many members, The Wicker Man very much forms the bedrock, being the culmination of the so-called Unholy Trinity that also included 1968’s Witchfinder General and 1971’s Blood on Satan’s Claw — three films about the power of traditions and the terror of an isolated community that has abandoned rationality.
Like other genre favourites, The Wicker Man is the story of an outsider who is inserted into a secluded community, with Robin Hardy’s film following a puritan police officer who arrives on a remote Scottish island called Summerisle to investigate the disappearance of a young girl. When he arrives, he discovers a pagan community entrenched in an ancient belief system that prioritises the fertility of the land and a shared sexual expression.
The community is led by the sinister Lord Summerisle (Christopher Lee) who is well aware of the coercive control he has over the community and consistently toys with Edward Woodward’s Sergeant Howie, whose dedication to the law has no sway on an island that outright rejects such morals. From his grand estate, the Lord presides over his land, manipulating the insular community with misinformation and, when their crops fail, ideological and violent extremism.
In actuality, the land’s makeup makes conditions volatile and, therefore, crops vulnerable to death and disease, but instead Lee’s Lord organises a human sacrifice all in the name of solving the island’s agricultural difficulties. It makes for an iconic climax that reverberates a warning against complicit groupthink in which lies are blindly accepted as truth, particularly among isolated communities that silo their members and restrict progressive thinking.
The Wicker Man is available to stream on BBC iPlayer in the UK and Prime Video in the US.
