Shillong, Oct 17: The Markham Festival opened on Friday with a mix of sporting events, literary activities, music, dance and art, bringing together residents to celebrate the region’s culture and creative talent.
Organised by the District Administration of Eastern West Khasi Hills in collaboration with the Lapateng Literary Society, the two-day festival, being held on October 16 and 17, features a range of activities, including bicycling, a marathon, singing, dancing and an arts exhibition.
A key attraction is the Markham Literary Festival, which offers readers and aspiring writers a space to explore literature and share their work. Bookstores and a book fair have brought books closer to the public, while poetry recitation and spoken-word competitions have given participants an opportunity to express their ideas and experiences through words.
The arts exhibition has added another dimension to the festival, showcasing creative works and giving local artists a platform to present their talent. Sporting events, meanwhile, have encouraged people to take part in physical activities and added to the festive atmosphere.
Beyond the individual events, the festival aims to bring people together and encourage greater participation in literature, art, culture and sports. It also seeks to give young people opportunities to develop their talents and take a greater interest in the region’s creative life.
The first day concluded with the festival’s celebrations set to continue on Saturday, with more activities planned as the event carries forward its focus on creativity, cultural expression and community participation.
