Developed by Umibots, the machines operate independently, reducing manual cleaning while protecting marine ecosystems. Already deployed in coastal cities, the technology could also help maintain urban spaces and prevent wildfires, demonstrating how robotics can support environmental protection.
The robots have operated on Santander’s beaches since summer 2025, following initial trials in Valencia in 2024. Costing approximately €50,000 each, they use precision GPS and laser sensors to navigate obstacles while filtering the top 10 centimetres of sand to collect cigarette butts.
The machines are currently deployed across eight of Santander’s 13 beaches. Following successful urban cleaning trials, Umibots plans to test modified robots for vegetation clearance and wildfire prevention around Madrid in December and January.
