The US Army is currently examining innovative wearable tech that provides soldiers with real-time alerts about incoming hostile drones during engagements.
The US Army is exploring wearable technology that could alert soldiers to the presence of hostile drones, as the military seeks to protect frontline troops from aerial surveillance and attacks without adding to their combat load.According to Defense News, citing US Army officials, the Army’s Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) C5ISR Center is investigating lightweight sensors that could detect drones through their acoustic signatures and potentially integrate with software to identify threats. The project remains at an early research stage, and the technology has not yet been tested.Beth Perry, director of the US Army Combat Capabilities Development Command’s C5ISR Center, said the Army was exploring lightweight, soldier-based sensors capable of detecting drones through their distinct acoustic signatures. She described the effort as an “early innovation project” and said the sensor could potentially integrate with software to identify the drone and help soldiers or their units respond.Jami Davis, assistant director for Soldier and Platform Mission Equipment, said soldiers’ priority was to know when they were being observed by an unmanned aerial system (UAS).Davis added that the Army wanted to provide this awareness without requiring soldiers to carry additional equipment, with the focus on making existing technologies smaller, lighter and more integrated.
Why this matters on the battlefieldThe war in Ukraine has demonstrated how a small, relatively inexpensive drone can turn a soldier’s movement into a potentially fatal risk.Along parts of the front line, persistent surveillance and first-person-view (FPV) attack drones have created what military analysts describe as a “kill zone”, where troops can be detected and targeted while moving between positions.Reuters reported in July 2026 that drone surveillance had made movement across sections of the front increasingly dangerous, forcing soldiers to hide in isolated positions and move in small groups. For infantry, the danger is not limited to a drone carrying explosives. Reconnaissance drones can spot soldiers, reveal their positions and help direct artillery or subsequent drone strikes.A wearable detection system could provide an early warning, giving troops precious seconds to seek cover, limit movement or alert their unit before an attack develops. The US Army itself has highlighted lessons from Ukraine, where widespread FPV drone use has exposed the limitations of relying solely on traditional counter-drone defences.Ukraine has also demonstrated the potential of acoustic detection. Its Sky Fortress, Zvook and FENEK systems use networks of low-cost acoustic sensors to recognise drone signatures and help cue local defences. The proposed soldier-worn technology would take this principle closer to the individual fighter. Instead of depending entirely on a separate detection team or a vehicle-mounted system, a soldier could receive a warning directly. On a battlefield where being spotted can be the first step towards being struck, knowing that a drone is nearby could make the difference between remaining exposed and having a chance to react.
