KUALA LUMPUR: A 25-year-old Chinese national arriving from Penang was arrested at Hong Kong International Airport last Thursday after 2kg of suspected cocaine were found in his checked-in luggage.
Hong Kong Customs said in a statement yesterday that the drugs were discovered during an inspection of his luggage.
The man was charged with trafficking in dangerous drugs, with the case scheduled to be mentioned at the West Kowloon magistrate's court today.
Hong Kong Customs said it would step up enforcement against cross-border drug trafficking through intelligence analysis.
It also reminded the public not to carry controlled goods or items of unknown contents for others, even in exchange for payment.
Under Hong Kong's Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, drug trafficking carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment and a fine of HK$5 million (RM2.7 million) upon conviction.
