Two men have been rounded up for allegedly throwing stones at a Jammu and Kashmir-bound bus following a dispute in Haryana's Karnal district, leaving a passenger and a dhaba employee injured, police said on Sunday (October 17, 2026).
The incident drew a reaction from Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who said his office had taken up the matter with the Haryana government.
Mr. Abdullah said the Haryana administration had assured prompt and stringent action in accordance with the law.
The J&K Government stands with the affected passengers and is closely monitoring the situation, he said in a post on his official X handle.
The incident occurred around 11.30 p.m. on Saturday (October 17, 2026) at the parking area of Divine Star Dhaba in Karnal, Inspector General of Police (Karnal Range) Ashwin Shenvi said.
According to Mr. Shenvi, two youths arrived at the spot in a car. The bus, travelling from Delhi to Srinagar, also stopped in the dhaba's parking area.
While attempting to reverse and move ahead, the youths allegedly hit the bus, triggering a verbal altercation that escalated into a physical fight. Some bus passengers and dhaba employees also joined the confrontation, police said.
During the altercation, the two youths allegedly threw stones at the bus, breaking its windowpanes and damaging seats inside the vehicle.
A passenger and a dhaba employee sustained injuries, Mr. Shenvi said, adding that the bus left for its destination around 1.30 a.m.
Mr. Shenvi, said the stone attack on the bus stemmed from a parking dispute and was not a hate crime. He urged the public not to believe rumours on social media.
Earlier, no formal complaint was made and the bus continued its journey to Srinagar, police said.
Police later registered a First Information Report (FIR) at Butana police station after the manager of the dhaba filed a complaint.
Both — Mohit and Sawan, residents of Karnal — have been rounded up for questioning. Police took the car into custody. Further legal proceedings are underway.
Mr. Shenvi urged people to remain calm and maintain peace and harmony while police investigate the matter.
Kashmir leaders condemn attack
The Jammu and Kashmir BJP, the Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) and Kashmir’s chief preacher Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Sunday (October 18, 2026) condemned the attack.
BJP spokesperson Altaf Thakur condemned the attack, saying that targeting people because of their Kashmiri identity was unacceptable.
“Such incidents are not acceptable in Modi’s India. Kashmiris deserve the same dignity, respect and hospitality in every part of the country as any other citizen. No one should be harassed, assaulted or humiliated because they come from Kashmir,” he said in a statement.
Thakur said Kashmiris were an integral part of India and must be able to travel, work and earn their livelihood anywhere in the country without fear or discrimination. He demanded an impartial investigation and strict legal action against those involved.
The Awami Ittehad Party, headed by Lok Sabha member Sheikh Abdul Rashid, also condemned the incident. In a letter to Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, AIP spokesperson Inam Nabi had demanded registration of an FIR, arrest of those responsible and compensation for the damage to the bus.
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq expressed concern over the attack, saying an elderly passenger had been injured and others traumatised.
“Disturbed to learn about the attack on a Kashmir bound bus in Haryana, leaving an elderly passenger injured and others traumatised. Reports of threats against J&K-registered vehicles are causing concern among people. Those in authority must ensure the safety of Kashmiri travellers and take swift and strict legal action against those responsible,” he said in a post on X.
