The Uganda Police Marine Unit has urged the public and water transport operators to strictly observe safety measures to reduce water accidents.
The unit is responsible for enforcing regulations governing water transport and ensuring the safety of all water users, including ensuring availability of essential safety gear such as life jackets and boats in good working condition.
Speaking during an interview on Salam TV’s Omukeeze program hosted by Salma Mamwanje, IP Makokha Vicent emphasized that wearing a life jacket before boarding a boat greatly increases chances of survival in case of an accident.
He advised members of the public to acquire basic survival swimming skills, noting that such skills can help one survive dangers posed by reptiles like crocodiles and mammals like hippopotamuses.
IP Makokha urged beach owners to always keep records of people using boats at their premises. He said this helps in establishing those who survived and those who did not in case of an accident, and eases police rescue and follow-up operations.
He further cautioned beachgoers to exercise personal responsibility and avoid peer pressure, stating that those who cannot swim should not attempt to swim.
He called upon the public to immediately notify police whenever a water accident occurs to enable a quick and effective response.
The officer warned boat riders against operating under the influence of alcohol, saying it endangers both their lives and those of their passengers. He also stressed that boat operators must possess valid licenses indicating the nature of their operations.
He assured the public that the Marine Police has sufficient manpower and equipment to conduct patrols and ensure safety on water bodies, adding that water transport is particularly risky during the months of June and July when strong winds often cause accidents.
