South Africans aged 60 and older can stretch their monthly budgets further at four major retailers, according to information on the companies’ official websites.
Clicks, Makro, Game and Builders all run dedicated programmes for older shoppers. However, each programme works differently, and some require pensioners to register in store before they can benefit.
Clicks rewards pensioners every Wednesday
Clicks automatically enrols older shoppers in its Seniors Club. ClubCard members over 60 become Seniors Club members and receive benefits on top of the standard ClubCard rewards, including double cashback, or 4% back, every Wednesday, as well as exclusive offers.
Pensioners do not need to sign up separately. Clicks uses the date of birth on record to opt in ClubCard members aged 60 or older. In addition, Seniors Club members who pay with an FNB card can earn double eBucks on Wednesdays.
Makro and Game offer savings every day
Massmart, which owns Makro, Game and Builders, set out the details of its pensioner programmes in a media release on 7 September 2026.
Makro shoppers aged 60 and older receive 10% off qualifying general merchandise and up to 5% off qualifying food and groceries through the mSeniors card, along with priority entry and dedicated checkout lanes. To qualify, customers apply in person at a Makro customer service desk with their South African ID. The discount applies to in-store purchases only and excludes marked-down, promotional and clearance items.
At Game, customers aged 60 and older get 10% off qualifying purchases of up to R3 000, any day of the week. Shoppers must show their Senior Citizens Card and a valid ID or passport at the till. The discount does not apply online and cannot be combined with Price Beat or other promotions.
Massmart marketing vice president Charmagne Mazhindu said value “for pensioners it often means making a fixed monthly income stretch further.”
The Builders discount works online too
Builders give registered customers aged 60 and older 10% off every Wednesday through its free Builders+ programme. Shoppers must register and verify their age with an official ID linked to their profile. Unlike the Makro and Game discounts, the Builders discount applies both in store and online.
However, the discount does not cover everything. Excluded items include products priced below cost, discounted or promotional items, value-added services, major appliances, air-conditioning units, electrical cables, cement, bricks, pavers, aggregates and lintels.
Pensioners should carry a valid ID when shopping, since most of these programmes require proof of age at registration or at the till.
