Itanagar, Oct 24: Violent protests against the proposed Upper Siang Multipurpose Dam rocked Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh’s East Siang district on Friday night, with protesters attacking residences of political leaders, setting fire to an NHPC office and a police station, and torching seven police vehicles.
The unrest continued until around 4 am on Saturday, with houses and residential complexes belonging to MLAs Ninong Ering and Oni Panyang, as well as BJP state president Kaling Moyong, attacked and vandalised.
The violence reportedly erupted following allegations that security personnel fired tear gas shells at bandh supporters in Geku, Upper Siang district, leaving four women seriously injured.
Protesters, including Gen Z demonstrators, were also demanding the release of 10 people detained during earlier protests against the proposed mega dam.
The situation escalated as demonstrators resorted to stone-pelting and arson, targeting government and police establishments in Pasighat.
The proposed Upper Siang Multipurpose Project, entrusted to the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC), has faced sustained opposition from local communities over concerns surrounding the massive dam.
The latest violence has intensified tensions over the project, with protests over the alleged use of tear gas and the detention of demonstrators spilling into arson and attacks on public and private property.
