JPMorgan has brought its dollar-denominated JPM Coin deposit token to Ethereum, giving institutional clients another public blockchain on which to move money between eligible counterparties. The service was already available on Base, Ethereum’s layer-two network.
The bank’s Kinexys business announced the expansion on October 19. JPM Coin, which uses the ticker JPMD, represents bank deposits rather than a new cryptocurrency offered to retail investors. Its arrival on Ethereum extends an existing institutional product instead of opening bank money to unrestricted public trading.
The distinction between a public blockchain and access to a financial service is central to the launch. Ethereum supplies the network on which transfers can be recorded, while the bank continues to determine which customers can use its deposit-token offering.
Cash moves closer to tokenized assets
JPMorgan says clients can now move institutional money on Ethereum as well as Base. That gives customers another way to bring a settlement asset into the same blockchain environment as tokenized investments, collateral and their counterparties.
A transaction involving a digital asset still needs a way to pay for it. When the asset and the payment sit in different systems, institutions must manage the steps connecting them. Putting both on compatible infrastructure can reduce some of that friction, although it does not remove the legal and operational conditions attached to either side.
The bank describes the expansion as part of a broader move toward multiple blockchain options for wholesale money. It also follows JPMorgan Asset Management’s tokenized money-market-fund offerings on Ethereum. The deposit token and a fund token remain different financial claims: one represents bank money, while the other represents an investment.
A deposit token is different from a retail stablecoin
JPM Coin was launched in November 2025 and supports peer-to-peer transfers between institutional clients. The Ethereum addition does not make it a freely available substitute for every dollar stablecoin already used in crypto markets.
For a recipient, the issuer and the nature of the claim matter as much as the blockchain carrying it. A token can be denominated in dollars while having different redemption conditions, access restrictions and legal protections from another dollar-denominated asset.
Our explanation of stablecoin pegs and redemption examines why a dollar label alone cannot establish how a holder gets back to cash. JPM Coin’s bank-deposit structure is a separate model, so the terms of the institutional service remain essential.
Network scale does not establish product usage
JPMorgan says the wider Kinexys platform has processed more than $4 trillion cumulatively, with average daily volume of $7 billion. Those figures describe Kinexys activity and are based on the bank’s internal data; they should not be presented as turnover already generated by JPM Coin on Ethereum.
The new network’s actual adoption will depend on customers using it for transfers and transactions. A live deployment establishes availability, while balances, counterparties and completed settlement activity would show how deeply it is being used.
For Ethereum, the significance is a major bank extending an operating deposit-token service onto the main network. The immediate development is institutional cash gaining another settlement route, with customer eligibility and the underlying bank claim still defining who can use it and on what terms.
