WhatsApp is developing a new sound stickers feature that will let users send stickers with short audio clips attached.
The feature was spotted in WhatsApp beta for Android 2.26.41.3, but it is still under development and is not yet available to beta testers.
How Sound Stickers Will Work
Sound stickers will look similar to normal stickers inside a chat, but they will include an audio track.
When a user receives one, an audio icon will appear over the sticker to indicate that it contains sound.
Tapping the sticker will play the attached audio. Both the sticker and its audio track will remain protected by end-to-end encryption.
Different From Static and Animated Stickers
WhatsApp currently supports static and animated stickers, but neither format includes sound.
Sound stickers will add another layer to the experience by combining a visual sticker with audio.
The sticker will remain visible in the conversation like a normal sticker, while tapping it will trigger the sound.
Users Will Be Able to Create Their Own Sound Stickers
WhatsApp is also working on tools that will allow users to make custom sound stickers.
The feature is expected to let users combine a sticker with an audio clip.
Users may also be able to convert a video into an animated sticker and use its audio to create a sound sticker.
This means the feature will not be limited to stickers provided through WhatsApp’s official sticker store.
Sound Stickers Will Respect Silent Mode
WhatsApp plans to make sound stickers follow the phone’s audio settings.
If the device is in silent mode, a sound sticker will play without audio.
Users will also be able to mute sound stickers manually by tapping the volume icon shown on the sticker.
WhatsApp will remember this preference for other sound stickers until the user changes it again.
WhatsApp Previously Removed Avatar Stickers
The company previously removed avatar stickers from its Android and iOS apps.
Avatar stickers allowed users to create digital versions of themselves and generate sticker packs, including combined stickers with contacts.
WhatsApp did not officially explain why the feature was removed, although low adoption is considered the most likely reason.
Availability
Sound stickers are currently being developed for Android.
They are not yet available for beta testing, and WhatsApp has not announced when testers will receive access.
The feature is expected to arrive in a future WhatsApp update once development is complete.
