By Zoila Palma: Colombian authorities have seized 7.6 tonnes of cocaine destined for the Netherlands at the port of Cartagena, in what President Abelardo de la Espriella described as the largest cocaine seizure at the port in the past decade.
The seizure was announced on Tuesday, following an operation by the National Police’s anti-narcotics directorate in coordination with the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), euronews reports.
The cocaine was concealed in a shipment of powdered panela, an unrefined cane sugar.
President de la Espriella said security forces had seized 132 tonnes of cocaine, valued at approximately US$6.1 billion, during his government’s first 75 days in office. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to combating drug trafficking and disrupting criminal networks.
Separately, the Dutch Public Prosecution Service confirmed that two Dutch nationals had been arrested in Colombia at its request.
