The No. 3 Ohio State Buckeyes managed to fend off the No. 5 Indiana Hoosiers to earn a 19-15 victory in Week 7. However, it may have come at the expense of quarterback Julian Sayin, who suffered a right elbow injury in the fourth quarter of that contest.
Head coach Ryan Day informed media members on Tuesday that the junior signal-caller is out indefinitely with the injury in his throwing arm, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
“Ohio State coach Ryan Day said that QB Julian Sayin is out indefinitely,” Thamel reported. “There’s a plan being put in place for Sayin not being available for both the regular season and postseason. He said there’s no specific timeline on the recovery. He’s dealing with an injury on his throwing arm.”

Day admitted that he and his program are preparing for the worst, as Thamel said in his report. The 47-year-old said that he and Ohio State are giving Sayin and his family privacy to deal with the injury before explaining how the Buckeyes plan to move forward, per Dillon Davis of the Delaware Gazette.
“So, first off, we’re not gonna put a timeline on [Julian Sayin’s] recovery, but he is out indefinitely,” Day said to media members. “And so, what we’re trying to do is give Julian and his family the space and privacy to go through this process.
“But based on the nature of the injury, we are putting together a plan for him not being available for the regular season and then also him not being available for the postseason,” Day continued. “So, based on that, if he’s not able to return next fall, we’ll put together a plan for that as well.”
Ryan Day said Julian Sayin will out be out indefinitely, and they’re putting a plan together to move forward as if he’s not gonna be available again for Ohio State.

Julian Sayin appeared in seven games for the Buckeyes this season. He was continuing his success with the program after finishing the 2025-26 campaign in the Heisman Trophy race. The 21-year-old has accumulated 2,007 passing yards and 19 touchdowns (leading the Big Ten for now) while completing 68.2% of his pass attempts this year.
Ohio State is likely to turn to true freshman Luke Fahey, who stepped in for Sayin after the injury against Indiana. Fahey has appeared in four games this year and has thrown for 203 yards for two touchdowns and two interceptions with a 69.2% completion percentage.
