Bangladesh University of Business and Technology (BUBT) hosted its first Math Jamboree, bringing together 274 undergraduate students from 41 universities and colleges across Bangladesh for a mathematics olympiad and a seminar on the future of applied mathematics.
Organised by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, the event took place at BUBT's campus in Mirpur-2, Dhaka, on Saturday, 17 October, 2026, with support from Aalok Healthcare & Hospital, according to the press release.
Participating institutions included Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet), Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (Kuet), Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (Cuet), Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (Sust), Islamic University of Technology (IUT), the University of Dhaka, East West University and Jagannath University.
Professor Dr ABM Shawkat Ali, vice-chancellor of BUBT, attended as the chief guest. Professor Dr Md Abdul Hakim Khan, dean of the Faculty of Science at Buet, delivered the keynote address.
Professor Dr Engineer Syed Abdul Mofiz, acting dean of BUBT's Faculty of Science and Engineering and chairman of its Department of Civil Engineering, attended as a special guest.
Dr KM Ariful Kabir, associate professor of mathematics at Buet and member secretary of the 16th National Undergraduate Mathematics Olympiad 2025, also attended as a special guest. Professor Dr Mohammed Forhad Uddin, head of Buet's Department of Mathematics, was present.
Dr Md Abdul Hye, chairman of BUBT's Department of Mathematics and Statistics and convener of the jamboree, chaired the keynote session.
Following the opening ceremony at 9am, participants competed in the olympiad across eight examination halls from 10am to 11:30am. They had 90 minutes to solve 40 problems covering calculus, linear algebra, coordinate geometry, vector analysis, probability, number theory and analytical reasoning.
The seminar, titled "Future Pathways of Applied Mathematics", began with a video message from Chamok Hasan.
In his keynote address, Professor Dr Md Abdul Hakim Khan highlighted mathematics' role in engineering, medicine, weather forecasting, finance, data science and emerging technologies.
Dr Md Abdul Hye emphasised its growing importance in artificial intelligence, scientific research and diverse career pathways. He also introduced BUBT's MSc in Applied Mathematics programme and encouraged students to pursue advanced studies in the subject.
During the afternoon session, Professor Dr Engineer Syed Abdul Mofiz praised participants' enthusiasm for mathematics. Dr KM Ariful Kabir discussed its essential role in computer science and engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, and civil engineering.
Md Istiyak Rahman of Buet became champion and received Tk15,000. Md Tanvin Ahammed of BUBT was first runner-up, receiving Tk10,000, while Md Shithil Islam of IUT finished as second runner-up and received Tk5,000.
Crests were awarded to participants securing fourth to 10th positions. They were Sk Nazmus Salehin Nirob of Kuet, fourth; Md Aminul Islam of Islamic University, Bangladesh, fifth; Samya Bachhar of Kuet, sixth; Dewan Adil Ahmod of East West University, seventh; Md Abdur Rahman of Jagannath University, eighth; Tasmia Jahan of Gono Bishwabidyalay, ninth; and Md Musfik Ahammed of Sust, 10th.
Every participant received a certificate and a jamboree T-shirt in recognition of their participation.
BUBT and its Department of Mathematics and Statistics thanked the vice-chancellor, university administration, keynote speaker, guests, participating institutions and students, question-setters and invigilators for their contributions.
They also acknowledged sponsors Aalok Healthcare & Hospital, Breeding Ground, Heron Water Purifier and Imperial City Centre, alongside faculty members, staff and student volunteers.
