Sam LaPorta Gets Blunt on Lions Future: 'I'll Go Get Paid Somewhere Else'

The Detroit Lions and Sam LaPorta reached a stalemate in contract negotiations earlier this year, resulting in some obvious frustration from the 25-year-old tight end.

During his appearance with the "Pardon My Take" podcast on Wednesday, LaPorta made those frustrations more evident than ever.

LaPorta made it very clear that he's willing to leave Detroit if the two sides are unable to come to an agreement.

“I think the combination of getting your heartstrings twisted as well as the violent sport we play — it sucks,” LaPorta said. “It’s disappointing that you go out there every week and you bear the risk of getting hurt. Like last year, whatever it was, Week 9, Week 10, I break my [expletive] back for this team. And then I’m going out there this year, and I’m balling, and maybe they’re just not showing the love.

"And in three months, if I don't get to wear the Honolulu blue and play for the Lions anymore, it's going to be all good. I'll go get paid somewhere else."

LaPorta is playing on the final season of his four-year, $9.4 million rookie contract, set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year. Through the first five games of the season, he has 27 catches for 316 yards and three touchdowns.

The Lions will face off against the division-rival Green Bay Packers in a Week 7 matchup on Sunday.
