Embattled Congresswoman Ilhan Omar’s usual bravado disappeared on Wednesday night as she was forced to answer the question that so many of us have grappled with: Did you marry your brother?
In the bizarre exchange with MS NOW’s Chris Hayes, the Squadette turned meek and uncomfortable as the topic turned to her second husband Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, her alleged brother-husband.
The story that she tied the knot with her sibling, she said, “started with the Somali blog . . . Somebody put it there, that he had to have been my brother or something to that effect. And right wing conspiracy theorists in Minneapolis got a hold of it.”
She called the accusations “insane.” The Minnesota Democrat did not however, call them false.
Then Hayes asked if she was related to her now ex hubby at all.
“Not to my knowledge,” she said, squirming like a toddler.
Not to her knowledge, folks.
And who among us really knows if they married a close relative? Heck, we’ve all been there, wondering the same thing. Is my spouse from the same small branch of the family tree?
Unless you’re Troy Jackson, the Democratic Senate candidate in Maine. While he didn’t technically marry his second cousin, he did have two kids with her.
Given that Omar’s answer was so relatable to so many, perhaps we need to rework some marriage traditions. Something borrowed could be genetics.
Also going forward, every wedding will be officiated by Maury Povich, who will kick off each ceremony by tearing into a large manilla envelope and declaring whether they are or are not brother and sister.
Or we could simply not use the institution of marriage for immigration fraud and to take advantage of the United States’ incredible kindness.
This country has been more than generous to Omar and to her father, who claimed to be a teacher but was reportedly a high ranking official for a genocidal warlord in Somalia. Heck, she was even elected to the United States Congress. What a great country, this America.
In return, she has expressed her unending gratitude by blasting the United States as a racist hellhole, while looking the other way at Medicaid scams and filing wildly fluctuating financial documents that either show her to be worth $30 million or broke.
This interview was Omar’s attempt to stop the bleeding, but she has only ripped open an even bigger scab.
In a video from Tuesday, she went after President Trump saying he was “running scared.” She then begged her supporters for money. Perhaps she could spend it on a DNA test.
