October 25, Colombo (LNW): A group of Buddhist monks continued their sit-in protest at Viharamahadevi Park in Colombo for a tenth consecutive day today (25), demanding the release of Venerable Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero.
The demonstration, which began on October 16, has remained in place as the participating monks maintain their position that they will not end the protest until their demand is addressed.
The group initially assembled outside the Presidential Secretariat before travelling to the Ministry of Buddhasasana, where representatives held discussions with the ministry’s secretary in an attempt to resolve the matter.
However, the talks failed to produce an outcome acceptable to the protesters. Following the meeting, the monks decided to continue their campaign at Viharamahadevi Park, turning the site into the focal point of their ongoing appeal.
As the demonstration enters its second week, the monks have reiterated their determination to remain at the location until steps are taken towards securing Gnanasara Thero’s release.
The continuing protest highlights the group’s efforts to draw attention to its demand and place the issue before the relevant authorities. No resolution had been announced by the time the demonstration reached its tenth day.
