The detection of flumazenil, the specific antidote to midazolam, in the body of Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis has added a new element to the investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death, according to a report by Mega Channel.
The substance, marketed under the brand name Anexate, was reportedly found alongside propofol and midazolam, two drugs already identified in the investigation into the medical treatment administered to the singer.
According to the Live News program, the finding confirms an earlier report it aired on Sept. 24 concerning Anexate and raises further questions about the medical interventions that took place before the public ambulance service arrived.
The two physicians, a husband and wife, are shown being led, as suspects, before investigating magistrates.
Three drugs under scrutiny
The first substance reportedly detected in Mazonakis’ system was propofol, a powerful intravenous anesthetic used to induce and maintain anesthesia and provide sedation under specific medical conditions.

Propofol has no specific antidote. When serious complications occur, treatment relies on supportive care, particularly maintaining adequate breathing and circulation.
Attention subsequently turned to midazolam, a benzodiazepine used for sedation, anxiety relief, the induction of amnesia before or during medical procedures and, in certain cases, the treatment of severe seizures.
The latest reported finding is flumazenil, marketed as Anexate. It is a specific antagonist of benzodiazepines and can reverse their sedative effects, including those of midazolam. It does not, however, reverse the effects of propofol, meaning its presence does not establish that both drugs’ effects were neutralized.
Anesthesiologist explains possible paradoxical reaction
Speaking to MEGA’s Live News, Dimitris Manikis, an anesthesiologist at the Attikon Hospital in Athens, explained that midazolam, although used for sedation, can occasionally trigger a paradoxical reaction, increasing agitation rather than reducing it.
In such circumstances, he said, additional sedative medication, including propofol, may be considered necessary.
Manikis also cautioned that combining the two drugs can intensify sedation and increase the risk of serious complications, including apnea, or the temporary cessation of breathing.
The distinction between the drugs is central to the investigation. Anexate can reverse midazolam’s effects but cannot counteract propofol. Respiratory depression associated with propofol requires appropriate supportive treatment by specialized medical personnel.
Questions over treatment before ambulance arrived
The reported detection of all three substances has renewed questions about the circumstances in which they were administered and the medical interventions undertaken before emergency services arrived.
Investigators are examining how the drugs were administered, the treatment provided and whether the procedures followed complied with applicable medical protocols. Previous reporting on the case has also highlighted conflicting accounts of the timeline at the private clinic in Kolonaki, where Mazonakis suffered cardiac arrest on Sept. 9 while reportedly undergoing preparations for plasmapheresis.
The presence of a substance in a person’s system does not, by itself, establish its role in a death. Determining the significance of the findings requires a comprehensive assessment of toxicology results, medical records, the quantities and timing of any drugs administered, and the other evidence gathered during the investigation.
