Mike Vrabel and Aaron Glenn faced off in Week 6, when the Patriots beat the Jets 26-19. Nick Sirianni’s Eagles also struggled that day, falling to the Panthers 25-14. All three coaches have faced scrutiny this season, and a league announcement this week has now placed them in the same conversation. The message behind it reaches well beyond a single game.
Mike Vrabel, Aaron Glenn and Nick Sirianni get $250K NFL fines each
The NFL has fined Patriots coach Mike Vrabel, Jets coach Aaron Glenn and Eagles coach Nick Sirianni $250,000 each for their conduct toward game officials, according to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer. ESPN later confirmed Sirianni’s fine through a source.
The league brought up the topic during this week’s owners meetings, where it addressed rising tension between coaches, players and officials. The three fines were cited as examples of that push.
The financial hit may never land, though. “That, of course, is a pretty stiff penalty and a clear statement,” Albert Breer added. “I’ve also heard that the fines are in abeyance, meaning they’d be on hold, and could be repealed with good behavior.”
The reports did not name the incidents behind each fine. Vrabel was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct in Week 4 after criticizing a call during New England’s 29-26 win over Buffalo. He later said, “I have to be better in those moments.”
Glenn was shown on camera in an animated exchange with officials during the Jets’ Week 6 loss, but he has not spoken about it.
Sirianni has a history of animated moments with referees, though his specific incident was not identified.
However, the announcement quickly drew a strong response online, and fans were far from silent.
Fans respond to the NFL fines on Vrabel, Glenn and Sirianni
Officials and coaches are now at the center of a heated debate, and fans quickly weighed in under Ari Meirov’s post on X. Many replies targeted the officials, while others mocked the fines.
One fan wrote, “Refs honestly need to be taken to a back alley”
Another fan added, “Refs already have enough say in the game, now you want coaches to not argue with crappy calls? Refs need fined for all the bad flags they throw”
A third mocked, “On hold and could be rescinded if they have better behavior” is hilarious lmao
Another fan slammed, “Man these refs… respectfully of course”
One user noted, “The league is making history with the amount of calls and these coaches have every right to give these cheating ass refs grief.@nflcommish GOODELL IS RUINING THE NFL. RUINED SO MUCH ALREADYl”
The debate has grown all month. The NFL suspended line judge Jeff Seeman for two games and referee Adrian Hill for one game earlier this month, and Peyton Manning also criticized the referees on air. Fans now see the coach fines as another test of who gets held accountable.
Now, the Patriots (4-2) visit the Bears on Thursday night, the Jets (2-4) host the Dolphins on Sunday, and the Eagles (2-4) face the Cowboys on Monday. All three coaches must now stay calm on the sideline to keep the fines on hold.
