Google's flagship model goes from gated cyber-defender access to general availability at $2/$10 per million tokens — undercutting the $4/$20 frontier floor that Anthropic and Meta just established. Standard pricing arrives December 1.

Google’s introductory pricing on Gemini 4 Argon is not a discount. It is a wedge. At $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output through November 30, Google has broken the $4/$20 per million token floor that Anthropic and Meta established as frontier parity. When the introductory period expires and standard pricing of $4/$20 takes effect on December 1, all three sit at the same rate. The temporary window is the structural signal: Google is buying developer mindshare before the market locks into a pricing equilibrium where no one has an edge on cost alone.
The general availability event itself is the expansion. Argon launched September 30 through Google DeepMind’s Fairwind Program, gated to over 650 trusted cyber defenders — government agencies, critical infrastructure operators, and security vendors. On October 13, that gate opens to developers, businesses, and consumers across the Gemini API paid tier, Google AI Studio, the Gemini platform, Google Antigravity for AI Ultra subscribers, and the Gemini app in Search. OpenRouter also lists the model as google/gemini-4-argon.
The pricing architecture reveals the acquisition intent. The introductory rate of $2/$10 holds through November 30. Standard pricing of $4/$20 takes effect December 1. Cached input tokens carry a 95% discount during the introductory window, dropping to approximately $0.10 per million — a rate specifically designed to attract developers building persistent agentic workloads where maintaining context across long sessions drives the bill. Google is not matching the frontier floor. It is undercutting it temporarily, then joining it.
Notably, the announcement of Argon’s general availability arrived without a traditional research blog post. A request to blog.google/technology/google-deepmind/gemini-4-argon/ returns a 404 error. This mirrors the pattern observed during Meta’s Muse Wonder launch one day earlier: the product surface is operational on distribution channels while the research surface remains empty. Two major frontier labs shipping models within 24 hours of each other, both choosing distribution over disclosure.
Argon’s benchmark positioning confirms the compression thesis we mapped in our Frontier Model Index analysis. On the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index v4.3.2, Argon scores 56 — tied with Claude Sonnet 5.5 Max and Claude Opus 5.5 Xhigh. Claude Opus 5.5 Max leads at 58. The top of the index spans exactly two points across four models. At that compression, benchmark scores stop separating the contenders. What separates them is price, and what price cannot settle, ecosystem lock-in settles.
The timing places Google in direct competition with two other launches inside a two-week window. OpenAI shipped GPT-6 Astra and the Dots platform on September 29. Meta shipped Muse Wonder on October 12. Google’s entry differs in one structural respect: it matched the $2/$10 introductory rate that OpenAI compressed its own margins to reach, arriving at the same economics on day one rather than undercutting or exceeding them.
Anthropic occupies a different position. The company holds $4/$20 on API pricing while steering toward enterprise customers, and its investor meetings open October 14 at a reported $1.8 trillion to $2 trillion bid range. The competitive gap is not in model capability — the index puts all four within two points of each other. The gap is in business model: Google and OpenAI are competing on developer acquisition through pricing and distribution, while Anthropic is competing on enterprise depth and deployment infrastructure.
The question that matters is not which model wins on benchmarks. At a two-point spread, the index cannot reliably separate them. The question is whether any provider can sustain differentiation when pricing converges and capability plateaus. Google’s introductory discount is a bet that developer lock-in during the acquisition window will carry forward once standard pricing arrives. The 95% cache discount targets the builders whose agentic AI workloads depend on persistent context — the same segment that will face the full $4/$20 rate in December.
The Fairwind fence has come down. What replaces it is a pricing war where the opening salvo expires in seven weeks.
