ABUJA: Minister of the Federal Capital Territory FCT, Nyesom Wike, has assured President Bola Tinubu that residents of the territory will not repeat the mistake of 2023 but would back his re-election in 2027.
“The mistake we made in 2023, would we make that mistake again? If it was an error, would we make that error again?” he asked a gathering in Bwari Area Council on Thursday. The audience answered no.
He spoke at an interactive session of the Rainbow Coalition, a political arrangement between members of the All Progressives Congress APC, the Peoples Democratic Party PDP and some other opposition parties.
Wike cautioned residents against “political gamblers” and pointed to ongoing projects in the territory as the reason to stay with the Tinubu administration.
On the senator representing the FCT, Ireti Kingibe, Wike asked whether anyone had felt her presence. “Today, the people of FCT, do you feel the impact? Do you feel the presence of the senator representing FCT today?” he asked. In her place, he presented Senator Philip Aduda and John Gbadaya as the coalition’s choices.
“After all, party is a vehicle that conveys you to where you are going. When you get there, you come down from the vehicle and you now work for the interest of the people,” he said.
The minister revealed that the coalition’s arrangement had already cost one politician a ticket. Julius Adamu, the PDP chairmanship candidate in the last Area Council elections, stepped down for the Bwari Area Council Chairman, Joshua. Wike said he would recommend Adamu for a position in the FCT Universal Basic Education Commission.
The FCT APC Chairman, Tanko Yamawo, described how deep the divide between the parties once ran. He said a former PDP chairman once refused a ride in his car for fear that sitting in an APC member’s vehicle could cost him his position.
The FCT PDP Chairman, Ismaila Dogara, said the coalition “had come to stay” and that his members were ready to work for Tinubu.
