Lamine Yamal is producing another extraordinary Champions League campaign, with the Barcelona teenager reaching new heights after delivering two assists in his side’s emphatic 4-1 victory over Galatasaray.
The 19-year-old had already set up a goal against Getafe last weekend, but his display in Istanbul took his influence to another level.
From a sublime pass to Fermin Lopez to an inspired piece of skill that created Anthony Gordon’s goal, Yamal repeatedly exposed Galatasaray’s defence and helped Barcelona turn a difficult contest into a convincing win.
His performance also carried historical significance, as Yamal became the youngest player to register multiple assists in consecutive Champions League appearances, achieving the feat at 19 years and 92 days.
That puts him three years ahead of Mesut Ozil, who accomplished the same feat in 2011 at the age of 22.
Lamine Yamal sets Champions League record with Barcelona
Yamal’s creativity has become central to Barcelona’s attacking approach, with the winger capable of unlocking defences through vision, close control and unexpected passing angles.
His assist for Fermin was a particular highlight, with the weight and trajectory of the pass opening up the defence.
The subsequent delivery for Gordon showcased another side of his game, as Yamal used his flair and confidence to create an opportunity that few players would even attempt.
Barcelona could have benefited from more of his creative work, but several promising moves failed to produce the finishing touch.
Even so, his two assists made him one of the defining figures of the 4-1 victory.
Yamal leads Champions League assist and creativity charts
Yamal’s numbers in the competition explain why his performances are attracting so much attention.
Barcelona opened their Champions League campaign against Feyenoord in a 5-1 victory in which Yamal recorded one goal and two assists, giving him three direct goal involvements in that match alone.
Against Galatasaray, he contributed two assists as Barcelona scored four times.
As a result, Yamal currently leads the Champions League assist charts with four.
He also has the most goal involvements, with five, and leads the competition for big chances created, with four.
Furthermore, he is joint-top for completed dribbles, with nine, and touches in the opposition box, with 22.
Those figures illustrate how frequently Yamal threatens opposing defences.
He is not simply providing the final pass; he is carrying the ball into dangerous areas and creating opportunities that force defenders into difficult decisions.
Yamal’s performances in Europe have become a story in their own right, particularly when compared with the different challenges he faces across domestic competition.
At just 19, he is producing numbers that place him among the competition’s leading attacking players and his latest display is another indication of his development.
