Christmas markets from HELL! The most depressing festive events seen across the UK - including £21 beers, enormous crowds and tempers flaring

Seasonal treats, steaming mugs of mulled wine and little ones perched on the knee of a jolly Santa Claus are all part of the magic of Britain's Christmas markets.

But increasingly, festive cheer is giving way to infuriatingly long queues, eye-watering prices, underwhelming attractions and even vicious brawls.

From overpriced hot dogs and bargain-basement decorations to disappointing rides and Santas who leave children in tears, a growing catalogue of Christmas market horror stories has left visitors questioning whether these supposedly magical days out are worth the money.

And with some attractions branded 'rip-offs', others slammed as 'hellscapes' and one festive fair even forced to close after just 24 hours, the past decade has provided plenty of examples of Christmas cheer gone horribly wrong.

From a grotto featuring an 'absolute fraud' Santa to London's embattled Winter Wonderland and the market branded Britain's 'worst', these are the festive fiascos that have left families fuming – and offer a timely warning to anyone planning a visit this year.

So, as the most wonderful time of the year approaches, here are the Christmas markets that might leave even the most enthusiastic Yuletide fanatic channelling their inner Scrooge...

The Grinch ride compared to Primark

A Grinch-themed ride at Glasgow's WinterFest in 2024 was slammed as a 'rip-off' by angry parents, lasting just one minute despite costing £5 a head.

The Grinch Christmas Adventure ride appeared to have been adapted from a fairground ghost train ride, but instead of suitably nostalgic interiors was filled with tawdry-looking Grinch merchandise.

The end of the ride featured the Grinch himself – or rather, a mannequin with a wispy beard, a Grinch mask in an unflinching stare, an ill-fitting Santa suit and off-colour gloves.

Writing on TikTok when the ride opened, mum Katy O'Brien said it should be 'shut down', while another commented: 'I'm obsessed with the fact that they just took a ghost train and stuck a load of Grinch Home Bargains gear in it.'

Another added: 'It's like having a rollercoaster in your loft when you've spilt the Christmas decorations everywhere, I'm howling.'

It prompted one rider to describe the attraction as 'a cart to take you round and show you the Grinch section of Primark'.

It has been compared to a disastrous Willy Wonka attraction in Glasgow also in 2024, which featured AI-generated adverts and sparse, bleak decor.

The market that lasted 24 hours

It promised a ‘fully immersive’ Christmas experience, with reindeer, a festive market and, naturally, Santa’s grotto.

But visitors to Yorkshire’s Magical Winterland in 2014 found it to be far from magical – and barely even wintry.

Children were reportedly left in tears as they entered a desolate warehouse with cardboard boxes and random material strewn all over the ground.

Many were unhappy that the ‘grumpy looking’ Santa did not even stay until closing time.

Others complained about the conditions that two reindeer were kept in.

Also among the litany of complaints were claims that the Christmas market only contained four stalls – while concerns were dismissed by rude staff.

Mother-of-two Leanne Potter said: ‘It was truly awful. The event was clearly just planned to make as much money as possible. They weren’t bothered about the quality of the event.’

The organisers of the event at the Great Yorkshire Showground, in Harrogate, were forced to close the event after only 24 hours after visitors said they were ‘appalled’ by the experience.

TV presenter's Christmas flop

Similarly, a winter attraction designed by TV presenter Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen in 2014 was closed after just a day of operations.

The ‘Magical Journey’ at the Belfry Golf Club in Warwickshire attracted more than 1,000 complaints about rude staff, a sweary Father Christmas and elves that ‘sat around smoking’.

More than 1,000 parents complained about the experience, which cost upwards of £50 for a family of three.

The attraction was deemed 'tacky' and 'unsafe' by families but it was re-opened after three days of design improvements.

Others raised health and safety fears after spotting elves having to push a ‘faulty Father Christmas Express train’ up a hill.

Parents also claimed some of the Father Christmases swore, were ‘grumpy’ or ‘far too skinny to be believable’.

Paul Dolan, the event’s director, apologised and admitted at the time it had experienced ‘teething problems’.

Budget Santa

An upmarket Santa's Grotto experience left children in tears due to the fake appearance of its stand-in Father Christmas, aggrieved parents claimed in 2024.

Visitors slammed the festive event at the historic Great Hall in Winchester and accused it of 'ruining the magic of Christmas'.

Parents said that the event's new replacement Santa fell far short of expectations.

One father remarked: 'It was nothing like the last one. This was just a guy dressed up in a cheap red suit with a blatantly fake beard and he wasn't very talkative at all - he didn't seem very jovial.'

Another woman wrote online: 'Santa... honestly I wanted to laugh, I've seen better Santas rolling around town on their way to Christmas parties, it was a very, very cheap suit, with maybe a cushion tucked into it, a lady dressed again in a Christmas sweater, but with glitter on her face.'

'Rigged' games in Taunton

Elsewhere, a Christmas market in Taunton came under fire over its 'rigged' games, dizzying prices and atrocious Santa last Christmas.

'I paid £18 to get in to see Santa, who is an absolute fraud,' content creator Emily said on TikTok. 'We sat in there for four minutes, and it was like tumbleweeds. He didn't even say "ho, ho, ho", and we got four minutes with the old man. Four. It was s***.'

It wasn't just her visit to Santa that ruined her 'disgraceful and embarrassing' trip but also the overpriced games that, according to Emily, no one could win.

She took issue with the price of the helter skelter, costing £3 for one slide.

'At Bridgewater fair, you get three slides for £3,' she said, before claiming the £5 game of hook-a-duck was rigged.

Emily hoped to round off the visit with a fun trip to the ice skating rink but her expectations quickly dwindled when she saw the 'absolutely grim' rink, saying: 'The rink itself is tiny, overcrowded, overpriced, and understaffed.'

Brawls at Winter Wonderland

One vicious brawl that broke out at Winter Wonderland in 2025 is only a single example of many of these types of incidents at the event – which has become one of the most complained-about festive attractions in Europe.

The annual event in London's Hyde Park has been criticised for years for extortionate prices and huge crowds.

Visitors have claimed overcrowding led to the chaotic scenes, which saw a group of men swinging punches at each other before a woman was apparently knocked unconscious.

One reveller who filmed the brawl claimed the fight started after one man accused another of 'touching his missus'.

He told the Daily Mail: 'Everyone was very drunk, you could tell something was going to happen.

'It was really lawless and chaotic and there were families with children as well. I go every year, and I've never seen anything like that.'

Winter Wonderland has seen trouble in the past, with a 22-year-old man injured in 2024 after an alleged acid attack.

Madness in Manchester and Liverpool

The situation further up north has also received some criticism, as visitors across Manchester, Liverpool and York have all taken their chance to hit out at their city's markets as well.

Manchester in particular had revellers sharing close-up footage of themselves being shoved in the throngs of the crowds.

People in the comments often pointed out that the trouble lies with people choosing to go on the weekends, which is intuitively going to be the busiest time.

One even expressed that visiting Christmas markets on Saturday and Sunday is only for 'amateurs', as others expressed that they had a lovely time going on less busy days during the week.

The UK's 'worst' Christmas market

It's become one of Britain's biggest festive events and has been attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors for 25 years.

But visitors to Bath Christmas Market have previously labelled it a 'hellscape' as heaving crowds attempted to squeeze through the city centre to look at more than 250 stalls.

Visitor Anni Bronning shared a clip of chaotically busy scenes on TikTok, captioning it: 'Packed like sardines and no pubs have any tables. What a hellscape!'

One Brit who posts as @escaping2paradise labelled Bath 'the worst Christmas market that I've ever been to' in a video that also showed the huge crowds.

He said: 'For starters, it doesn't actually feel like a Christmas market. It's just a market that happens to be at Christmas, with a few Christmas decorations scattered about.

'There's no Christmas music, no Christmas atmosphere. When you do buy something from the street vendor, it's just '£7, next', '£15, next', '£12, next'. No 'Merry Christmas'.'

£21.50 for a beer and a hotdog

A ruined Christmas came as early as the start of November for people visiting Birmingham's Frankfurt Christmas Market in 2025 – the biggest German market in the country.

Those attending the market found themselves paying London-esque prices for steins of beer – £12.50 for a large, two-pint Hofbrau, anyone? – and authentic continent-style bratwurst, which cost £9 at the time.

But the event was also fiercely criticised for not allowing visitors to buy more than one drink per transaction – stopping them from getting a round in.

Organisers said this was to combat underage drinking but visitors fumed that it meant they would have to spend their time 'standing about in the cold'.

Regular visitor John Beard, 35, said: 'People are watching the pennies more than ever and don't want to spend nearly a tenner on a sausage. You can blow about £50 in ten minutes.'

He added: 'This will be the first time in ten years I'm not going to bother. It's a combination of the rip-off prices and that one beer rule is just daft.'

The foodie festival – with terrible nosh

Visitors to Eating With Tod's Christmas market last year criticised the event as 'terrible', and 'lacking atmosphere' with one former restaurateur describing the dishes as 'the worst he's ever eaten'.

The 30-year-old, whose real name is Toby Inskip, was once Britain's biggest food influencer with more than 2.1 million followers.

Hoping to make the most of his viral fame, he launched a Christmas market on London's Tottenham Court Road last year.

The event promised to bring together some of the most highly anticipated food brands as traders to deliver Instagram-worthy dishes like cinnamon buns dripping in icing by Roll Boys, loaded festive hot dogs by Ruben's Rubens, and flame-toasted marshmallows on hot chocolate by Chin Chin.

But visitors to the market were left disappointed.

Former restaurateur Richard Crampton-Platt, who now reviews restaurants on his social media accounts, declared that the market offered 'some of the worst food I'd ever eaten'.

Writing in his TikTok video of Tod's market, Richard – known as The Greedy Dick on his social media – said that the event had promised 'spectacle' but instead, delivered 'only cold concrete'.

He described it as 'charmless', taking issue with the lack of shelter from the elements – which several other TikTokers also complained about due to recent bouts of wet weather ruining the experience.

'Christmas Spectacular' canned after two days

A Christmas event held in Bury St Edmunds in 2024 promised 'unforgettable' festive fun for a period covering four weekends – and yet was cancelled after two days.

It advertised ice skating, a Santa's Grotto, face painting and a Christmas workshop.

However, it failed to deliver, and cancelled future events after the opening weekend.

Dan Prescott, who visited with his family, told the BBC: 'My five-year-old really wanted to do ice skating but it was a plastic rink, which looked miserable and even she knew it was rubbish.

'Nobody knew what was going on if I am honest, and people didn't know whether to laugh or not because it was just terrible.

'We thought there would be lights, snow and Christmas stuff, but it was really poorly put together and not Christmassy at all and did not give off Christmas cheer.'

The Michael Buble tribute act was branded 'dreadful'.

A spokesman for the event added at the time: 'Unfortunately, we've been really up against it with the numerous storms, wind and extremely wet conditions during the site build.

'Our fairground supplier has been stuck in the Wales floods and a number of our Christmas market traders pulled out off the back of this.'

They added: 'We sincerely apologise for any disappointment this has caused.'

The £50 'YouTube slideshow'

Fuming parents who forked out £50 for Crieff Hydro's Christmas event in 2024 were left bitterly disappointed after an 'interactive train ride' turned out to be a projection of animals onto a screen.

Single mother Danica Archibald took her one-year-old daughter Florence to see the event near Perth, Scotland at the end of November, but found the event lacking.

In all, she paid £50 for tickets for herself, her sister, mother and daughter – and found the food was just as pricey.

The 'winter wonderland' consisted of four stalls, an ice rink and a snowflake projector – as well as the train ride featuring a video of winter animals.

She recalled: 'We get on the train and you went into a tent where they played a video for two minutes and 30 seconds. It was a projection onto the wall.

'It was like a YouTube video - it was a slideshow of polar bears and reindeer. Then the train went out of the tent onto the light path.

'At this point we were really annoyed that we'd spent £50 to watch a video on a wall.'

More than a third of visitors gave the experience a rating of one out of five on Scottish voucher website Itison.

The Crieff Hydro said in response: 'We are aware of a small number of visitors who felt disappointed by the train experience, and we aim to learn from that feedback for future events.'
