Ricky Hatton's £40M estate under scrutiny after death

British boxing legend Ricky Hatton may have left behind a multimillion-pound fortune, but questions surrounding the actual value of his estate have emerged following his death in September 2025.

More than a year after the former world champion died aged 46, his family is seeking answers about his finances, with his reported £40 million net worth now a subject of uncertainty.According to a report by Daily Mail Sport, Hatton’s parents, Ray and Carol Hatton, and his eldest son, Campbell, have expressed frustration over what they describe as a lack of transparency regarding the administration of his estate. The family is particularly concerned about the extent of the boxer’s remaining wealth, the assets held through companies and trusts, and when his three children will receive their inheritance.

Ricky Hatton’s reported £40 million net worth raises questions

Hatton was among Britain’s most celebrated boxers, building a successful career through major victories, world championship titles and lucrative fights. His financial success continued beyond the ring through business interests and investments. While reports have placed his fortune at around £40 million at the time of his death, his family believes the actual position may be more complicated.Ray Hatton has reportedly estimated that his son was worth approximately £26 million towards the end of his boxing career in 2011.

According to Ray’s records, this included around £19 million in cash and £7 million in assets, with no outstanding debt at the time.Ray believes the reported £40 million valuation was plausible given his son's earlier financial position. However, he has also raised questions about reports that Ricky had taken out bridging loans against properties in his later years. The family has not publicly established the final value of the estate, and the £40 million figure should not be treated as a confirmed valuation of his assets at the time of his death.

What happened to Ricky Hatton’s money after his death?

One of the central issues is the administration of the Dorothy Hatton Discretionary Trust, established approximately 26 years ago and named after Ricky’s grandmother.According to the report, a substantial portion of Hatton’s wealth, including money held through bank accounts, investments and companies, is understood to be connected to the trust. His former secretary, Catherine Lomas, and former legal adviser Paul Dodds are reportedly responsible for overseeing the trust.

Campbell has alleged that his attempts to obtain information about the estate have not yielded satisfactory answers. The trustees, however, have rejected the criticism levelled against them. In a response to Daily Mail Sport, they said they took their responsibilities seriously and had received professional advice, adding that discussing the trust’s administration publicly would not be appropriate because it was a private matter. There has been no established finding of wrongdoing by the trustees.

Ricky Hatton’s business empire and company assets

Hatton was reportedly a director of 20 companies at the time of his death. Among them was DHT Finance Ltd, a company he controlled.Accounts filed at Companies House, as cited in the report, showed that DHT Finance Ltd held approximately £18.7 million in funds. However, other companies had reported financial liabilities, including RHHP Ltd, which had net liabilities of around £2.1 million. The combined balance across the 20 companies was estimated at approximately £14 million, according to the report. This figure does not necessarily represent the total value of Hatton’s personal estate, as the full position involving other investments, bank accounts, property holdings, liabilities and trust assets remains unclear. The distinction is important because company funds, personal wealth and assets held through a trust are not automatically interchangeable when calculating an individual's net worth.

Ricky Hatton’s three children are the intended beneficiaries

Hatton was survived by his three children: Campbell, 25 at the time of the report, and his two younger daughters, Millie, 15, and Fearne, 13.Campbell, who has also pursued boxing, has reportedly sought greater clarity about the estate and when the beneficiaries can expect distributions. He has described the lack of answers as concerning and said the uncertainty has made an already difficult period more challenging.Ray and Carol have stressed that they are not seeking a share of their son's money. Their stated concern is that his children receive what they are entitled to and that the family understands the financial circumstances he left behind. The absence of a will, as understood by the family, may also complicate the process. However, the existence of the discretionary trust means that the precise legal arrangements governing individual assets and distributions would need to be established before drawing conclusions about inheritance.

Ricky Hatton’s final months and concerns over his comeback

The questions surrounding Hatton’s finances have also brought renewed attention to his plans to return to boxing shortly before his death.According to his parents, Hatton had been preparing for a comeback fight in Dubai, approximately 15 years after his last professional bout.Carol recalled a conversation with her son three days before his death in which he reportedly told her he felt he was being treated like a “cash cow”.

She said he did not identify the people he was referring to.Ray also recalled questioning his son's decision to fight again at the age of 46, expressing concern about whether the comeback was being pursued for personal reasons or because of pressure from others. These recollections have contributed to the family's desire to understand Hatton's financial position during his final years. However, they do not establish that financial pressures caused his death or that any individual was responsible.Hatton died on September 14, 2025, aged 46. His death was a devastating loss for his family and the boxing community.Known affectionately as “The Hitman”, Hatton captured world titles and became a major attraction in the sport, with his victory over Kostya Tszyu in 2005 marking a defining moment in his career. His popularity extended beyond Britain, and he remained closely associated with Manchester and the communities that supported him.
