Founder of The Headies, Ayo Animashaun, has criticised Nigerian artistes who publicise their submissions to international award bodies but allegedly overlook local music awards.
Animashaun expressed his displeasure in a series of posts on his Instagram Stories, questioning why some musicians announce their entries for foreign awards but fail to submit their works for consideration at The Headies.
He also criticised artistes who complain about not receiving nominations, suggesting that some of them pay more attention to international recognition than supporting Nigeria’s music industry.
Although he did not mention any artiste by name, his comments have renewed conversations about the importance of local music awards as Afrobeats continues to gain international recognition.
The remarks come as Nigerian artistes, including Davido, Tems, Asake and Ayra Starr, reportedly submit works for consideration at the 2027 Grammy Awards.
The Headies, established in 2006, has played a significant role in recognising Nigerian musicians across different genres and celebrating emerging talents.

However, the awards have faced criticism over nomination decisions, organisation and the participation of some prominent artistes.
The organisers recently postponed the 18th edition, which was scheduled to hold in Toronto, Canada, on 23rd October. The ceremony has now been moved to 10th and 11th April 2027.
The organisers explained that the postponement would allow them more time to develop activities in Nigeria and Canada.
The development has generated discussions about the future of the awards and their relevance to the Nigerian music industry.
Animashaun’s comments have also raised questions about the responsibilities of artistes and award organisers in strengthening local entertainment institutions.
While international recognition provides Nigerian musicians with wider exposure, local awards remain an important platform for celebrating achievements within the country’s music industry.
Whether the criticism will encourage more artistes to participate in future editions remains to be seen.
