Skydance has shaken up Hollywood after completing its year-long acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery for $110 billion, and the streaming world is already facing massive changes. For one thing, the merger of the two companies will lead to Skydance combining HBO Max and Paramount+ into a single streaming service. And now, just days after the merger, one of Warner Bros. Discovery's other streaming platforms has made a huge change, effective immediately.
According to Cord Cutter News, Discovery+ raised the price of its cheapest ad-supported subscription by $1 to $6.99 per month. Meanwhile, the platform increased the price of its ad-free tier by $2 to $11.99 per month. Current subscribers have received 30 days' notice of the price change, with the new charges popping up on their billing statements on or after November 12.
It's not uncommon for streaming services to increase subscription costs these days, as we have seen this done by major platforms like Netflix, Disney+, Peacock, and Apple TV. Variety reported that the price hike was planned by Discovery+ months before the merger's completion. Whether Skydance contributed to this decision is unclear.
"Consumers can expect greater innovation from a company built with technology at its core, including significant improvements to its direct-to-consumer streaming products, which will unify into a single service over time," Skydance said in a statement following the merger.
With its recent price change, Discovery+ has indicated that it will continue to exist for the foreseeable future. Warner Bros. Discovery almost took down Discovery+ in 2023 following its merger the previous year. However, even after Skydance bought out the company, the platform remains a major part of the media giant's streaming lineup.
