University of Zambia Historian, Bizeck Phiri has called on Zambians to embrace the unity and peace that has long been sustained throughout the years of celebrating independence.
Prof Phiri says despite Zambia going through different party systems, democracy has been one of the virtues that has stood the test of time, describing its roots as strong.
Prof Phiri emphasised that as Zambia celebrates 62 years of independence with the theme “Our Journey, Our Growth, Our Future” the key milestone to look up to is when independence was gained on October 24th 1964.
He, however, called upon the government to tackle balancing the economy as outlined in its vision, stating that economic development has a great impact on democracy.
Meanwhile, Governance Expert, Noel Chisebe describes that Zambia has attained democratic maturity looking at the peaceful transfers of power from different governments and its constitutional evolution.
Mr Chisebe noted Zambia’s democracy as resilient and peaceful regarding it as the greatest asset, making history with return to multiparty politics peacefully through the ballot in the 1990’s.
He also commended the growth of entities that help to uphold democracy such as the Electoral Commission of Zambia, Judiciary, Parliament and Anti-Corruption Commission.
Mr Chisebe further urged Zambians not to take for granted the peace that the country has been enjoying for years.
