JOHOR BAHRU: The Johor state education department will issue daily notifications on school closures due to the haze, despite the state government having announced a five-day extension yesterday, an executive councillor said today.
Dr Muhammad Naqib Md Ghazali said the department was required under administrative procedures to provide daily updates, subject to directives and protocols set by the education ministry.
“I hope all parties understand that these daily notifications are part of the administrative procedures the department must comply with, and do not conflict with the state government’s announcement,” he said in a social media post today.
He stressed the safety and well-being of school children in the state should be the priority for all parties at this time.
Earlier today, many parents took to social media to express concern over the extension of school closures in Johor and seek clarification from the state government and the education department.
The department had announced today that all schools would be closed tomorrow, while the state government had announced yesterday that the closure would be extended until Oct 16.
Principals of residential schools would decide whether to allow students to return home, taking into account their safety and well-being and current risk assessments.
The education department said assessments examinations would be postponed and rescheduled.
