Most golfers panic when their putter starts misbehaving. They immediately swap grips, buy new clubs, or try to rebuild their entire stroke from scratch. This approach usually makes things worse. Ben Crenshaw, a player with two Masters titles in 1984 and 1995, took a different path when his game went sideways. He kept his stroke constant and adjusted the ball position instead. According to MyGolfSpy, Crenshaw believed that changing the stroke is what gets people in trouble. His fix was imperceptible, moving the ball just a little up or back until the roll looked right. This subtle shift offers a solution for amateurs who struggle with consistency on the greens.
The core of Crenshaw’s philosophy rests on repeatability. Putting is a personal game, and finding a stroke you can reproduce under pressure is vital. A new stroke you cannot repeat is not a fix; it creates a new problem. MyGolfSpy reports that Crenshaw’s approach holds the stroke constant while adjusting the variables around it. He noted that ball position isn’t just about forward and back movement. His swing suffered when he stood too far forward in his stance and approached the ball too closely. He described his stroke as freer than most, and a free-flowing stroke needs room to work.
Diagnosing the Roll
Identifying the right position requires watching how the ball leaves the face. MyGolfSpy outlines specific symptoms and the corresponding adjustments needed. If the ball skids or hops off the putter face, the player should try moving it slightly forward. Conversely, if putts pull to the left or launch high and bounce, moving the ball slightly back often corrects the issue. When the stroke feels cramped, the player needs to check their distance from the ball, not just the forward or backward alignment. Crenshaw’s answer was essentially to move the ball until the roll looks right. This honest approach relies on visual feedback rather than rigid rules.
Greens change all the time, so a static setup rarely works for every situation. Crenshaw stressed that his routine involved hitting longer putts early in the round to watch what the ball does. This observation period helps determine the exact position needed for that day’s conditions. The data suggests that many golfers ignore ball position entirely. They focus on expensive equipment changes while neglecting the most effective variable in their bag. MyGolfSpy notes that keeping the stroke you can repeat is the foundation of success, with ball position acting as the fine-tuning knob.
Overhauling a stroke under pressure is a recipe for disaster. The human mind struggles to learn complex motor skills quickly, especially when stakes are high. Crenshaw understood that a simple adjustment yields better results than a total rebuild. By moving the ball imperceptibly, the golfer changes the angle of attack and the point of contact without altering the fundamental rhythm. This method respects the individual nature of a player’s swing. It acknowledges that a stroke that feels right for one person might need a slight tweak for another to produce the same result.
The evidence supports this conservative approach. Crenshaw’s two Masters wins stand as proof that his method worked at the highest level. Players still talk about his touch on the greens decades later. The lesson is clear: do not fix what isn’t broken. If the stroke is repeatable, trust it. Adjust the ball position to match the green conditions and the desired roll. This saves time, money, and mental energy. Golfers can stop chasing the perfect grip or the newest putter model. Instead, they should focus on the subtle shifts that Crenshaw mastered. MyGolfSpy highlights that this awareness of ball position is a concept many golfers overlook.
Practical Steps for the Weekend Golfer
Implementing this fix requires patience and observation. Start by standing over the ball with your current setup. Hit a few putts and watch the roll closely. If the ball hops, move it forward an inch. If it launches too high, move it back.
