Former MLA K.B. Prasanna Kumar has thanked the State government for its decision to celebrate the birth anniversary of Madhwacharya every year on October 21.
Addressing a press conference in Shivamogga on Thursday, Mr. Prasanna Kumar said he was thanking the government on behalf of the Brahmin community and followers of the Madhwa philosophy.
He said that during his tenure as MLA from Shivamogga, he had appealed to the then Congress government to observe the birth anniversary of Madhwacharya every year. He had also urged the government to celebrate the birth anniversaries of both Madhwacharya and Ramanujacharya on the lines of Shankara Jayanthi.
Such a move would help spread Madhwacharya’s message among the younger generation, he said, and urged the government to take a similar decision on celebrating Ramanujacharya’s birth anniversary.
Shivamogga Taluk Brahmin Sangha president Suresh Nadig and others were present.
Separately, P.M. Malatesha, director of the Karnataka State Brahmin Development Board, also thanked the government for the decision, particularly Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and Minister for Kannada and Culture Shivaraj Tangadagi.
In a press communique issued on Thursday, Mr. Malatesha said the decision was a significant step in honouring the religious and cultural traditions of the Brahmin community.
