When it comes to autumn knitwear, there are specific styles that return year after year. From classic cable knits to chunky roll necks, they're the sort of staples that never truly go out of fashion, nailing chic seasonal outfit formulas. But, one print that I'm particularly pleased to see back in business is Fair Isle, a heritage design that has been given a rather unexpected update for autumn 2026.
Originating from the tiny Scottish island of the same name, Fair Isle knitting is immediately recognised by its intricate, repeating geometric patterns, often featuring diamonds, crosses and small motifs in contrasting colours. Having been a staple of British wardrobes for decades, the print has become synonymous with cosy winter dressing. But this season, high street brands are moving away from the traditional designs in favour of something a little more playful.

Take Next, for example. The retailer has just dropped a rather chic knitted style that gives the Fair Isle look a fun, equestrian style twist. Instead of the usual geometric motifs, Next's style comes with horses and horseshoes, bringing a touch of countryside, stable charm to the classic cosy staple.
Yet, it's not just the print that makes this cardigan worth adding to your knitwear roster. Constructed from a cosy wool blend fabric, it features a smart knitted collar, button up fastening and ribbed trims, giving it a slightly more structured finish than your average cardigan.

Bonus points are due here too: it can easily double as a lightweight jacket on those crisp autumn mornings when a proper coat still feels a little excessive, and you want a break from your go to bomber jacket.
As for styling, It would be fun to lean into the countryside charm and pair the cardigan with a pair of dark indigo jeans (very on trend) and a pair of knee high riding boots. If you're looking to keep it subtle (though, there's nothing exactly subtle about a cardigan with equestrian motifs) pair the knit with tailored trousers and sleek black loafers in either leather or suede.
