The New York Knicks are in a strong position to go back-to-back this season if things go according to plan, though the organization still has a few things to consider.
For one, the Knicks won't have an easy time winning it all, even if they stay healthy all season. They found out last year just how difficult it is to win a championship, even during that historic run.
As for other problems, the Knicks keep making questionable decisions with star center Karl-Anthony Towns.
Towns, undoubtedly one of the better players in the NBA, finds himself in a strange contract situation.
Reports indicate he's willing to take less than the max, but it's still unclear what's holding things up. Because of that, some have recently suggested he could be traded.
“Look, the Knicks have set themselves up to be fixtures on the NBA trade rumor market this season. Trading away Towns would be terribly unwise for the Knicks, but not settling on an extension for Towns as he heads toward free agency was unwise, too.
“So the fact that the Knicks have not done the second thing leads to an assumption that they’re at least somewhat open to do the first thing. Is there an offer that would get the Knicks to the table? Probably not. But it will be endlessly discussed,” Sean Deveney wrote.
Moving on from Towns really doesn't make a whole lot of sense for the Knicks as they search to go back-to-back.
Teams have certainly done worse things in the past, but the Knicks have the money, a team that just won a championship, and one of the best players in the world next to their superstar Jalen Brunson.
Letting that happen again would be a very questionable decision.
