According to the Directorate-General of Health (DGS), the passage of the hot air mass from the deserts of North Africa will affect most of the national territory, with poor air quality expected throughout the country, CNN Portugal reports.
The DGS also warns that inhalable particles, a type of air pollutant, can affect human health, particularly among vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly. It therefore recommends taking additional precautions, including avoiding prolonged physical exertion and limiting outdoor physical activity.
It also recommends that children, the elderly, people with respiratory problems such as asthma, or people with cardiovascular disease remain indoors whenever possible, preferably with the windows closed.
In case of worsening symptoms, the DGS advises the public to contact the Health Line 24 (808 24 24 24).
