The Botswana juniors secured successive singles and doubles titles at the World Tennis/African Tennis 14&Under tournaments in Gaborone.
BONGANI MALUNGA
Botswana’s Lebone Tlape and Angel Chakanyuka completed successive singles and doubles title triumphs at the World Tennis/African Tennis 14&Under tournaments in Gaborone. Their victories extended a successful run on home soil and highlighted the country’s emerging junior tennis talent.
TLAPE’S DOUBLE
Tlape defeated Kenya’s Maina Olembo 6-4, 7-6(2) in the boys’ singles final to claim his second continental 14&Under singles title. He held his nerve in the second set tie break to close out the match without a deciding set.
Tlape then partnered Francesco Brink in the boys’ doubles final against Olembo and Zimbabwe’s Tinevimbo Chinamo. The pair won 6-1, 6-3, securing another title and leaving Olembo beaten in both finals.
CHAKANYUKA TRIUMPHS
Chakanyuka matched Tlape’s singles success by defeating Zimbabwe’s Chloe Hayes in the girls’ final. She won the opening set 6-0 before taking the second 6-4 to claim her second continental 14&Under singles crown.
Her straight sets victory highlighted her attacking quality and ability to maintain control against international opposition. It also completed another successful singles campaign for the Botswana youngster.
DOUBLES SUCCESS
Chakanyuka subsequently teamed up with Reene Sebego to win the girls’ doubles title. They defeated Camila Seetso and Anotidaishe Chinyanga in a final that also featured other emerging players.
While Tlape and Chakanyuka led the title haul, the presence of several Botswana players in the doubles finals offered another indication of the country’s developing junior ranks. Their successive singles and doubles victories also demonstrated consistency across consecutive competitions.
